"always the tone of surprise."

Last night? Kind of sucked. I got home from NOCCA at 7:30, ate dinner, and went down for a nap before Harry Potter, only to wake up a couple hours later sick to my stomach. I almost went anyway but figured that I wouldn't enjoy the movie if I spent the entire time trying not to throw up, and it would kind of ruin it for the people sitting around me ( Read more... )

I agree with your review so much except one thing:

Ralph Fiennes. I think he is my ideal Voldemort so much so that I actually want him to get nominated for an Oscar. I think it's rather obvious that Rowling is making a social commentary on alterity and the history of racism, prejudice, etc. especially in relation to the Holocaust (the rounding up of Muggles, "purebloods" and the relaying back to the whole notion of the Aryan race, etc.). I keep thinking of Fiennes' brilliant performance as Goeth, which was subtle, yet incredibly disturbing. It's basically how I see Voldemort, and even though I got into the books before the films were made, that's how I imagined Voldemort: subtle, disturbing, slithering, conniving. I think Fiennes pulls that off so incredibly brilliantly; he terrifies me, unlike Helena who is over the top and comical. Fiennes is downright terrifying. I think he is absolutely amazing. And I know not everyone will agree with me, but every time he came on the screen last night/this morning, I was just creeped out and blown away.

Either way, I agree with you on the other stuff.

See, you have all of these well thought out reasons why you love him in the role and I really don't have anything to defend my position except he just doesn't work for me. I completely agree with how you imagine Voldemort (subtle/disturbing/slithering/conniving) - I just don't see that in Fiennes' portrayal. He's not cartoonish like HBC, but he's not particularly scary to me, either.

To each their own, though! I'm glad we agree on the rest!
