The only thing I truly dislike about the holidays is the sudden jolt back into reality that always follows them. I realize that it's not that big of a deal for most people, a couple of extra days off of work to spend with their families and then it's right back into the swing of things. But in my line of work, it's a nightmare.
Three weeks off of work, getting use to the, well, relative peace and quiet, and then, not just coming back to work but coming back to a new semester. I swear, this place is like a zoo, after all the animals have been let loose. I've given out more detention today than I have in the last two months combined. Kids getting into fights, ditching class, making it to class only to fall promptly asleep, students mouthing off to teachers, refusing to stop chitchatting when the bell rings; they just refuse to accept that the break is over. And the line in the guidance office? Well, "in" isn't exactly the correct word since the line reaches halfway down the hall, and it hasn't gotten any shorter all day. They've lost their class schedules, forgot their locker combinations, don't like their teachers and want to change their schedules. What kind of an excuse is that? You don't like your teacher so you want to change your schedule? I feel real sorry for these kids when they have to get jobs and discover that they don't like their bosses. Who are they going to complain to then? And the list of names of kids who have signed into the nurse's office complaining about headaches and upset stomachs? *sighs* These are the days when I really hate my job.
In other news,
Xander and I took down the infamous Christmas lights this weekend. Fortunately, things went much smoother with the take-down than they did with the put-up. No one ended up dangling from the roof this time. *chuckle* I think some of the girls were actually disappointed about that.
Ah, looks like I have another detention candidate waiting for me. You know, I really don't enjoy having the job of doling out the disciplinary actions around here. Giving out lectures and detention slips and the occasional suspensions are not why I got into this job, and I get no joy from punishing students. Plus, all that paper work's a royal pain in the you know what.
