I think this actually works when you search on google so I'm trying it! Suibhne found a ferret in her garage and it is sweet and tame and probably missed by someone! It's currently hanging at my house - hoping that an ad here will be picked up by google searches ( Read more... )

poor thing! ferrets are not cheap critters, in fact in some states they're illegal to own, and in most states they're illegal to breed. I'd say definitely report it to the local shelters & ASPCA as a lot of them have lost and found lists or bulliten boards. most vets have those too, but there are only a handful of vets that will actually see ferrets, so you might call around local vets & see if anybody's reported one missing that matches his description. you might also check if there's a local ferret rescue group in that area. people with ferrets who really care about them know this stuff & that's the first place I'd call other than a shelter. even when you take a ferret to a shelter, 90% of times they'll call a ferret rescue group to come and pick it up since they're more specialized and know more about caring for them than a regular shelter would. if somebody let it out on purpose (they should be shot if that's the case) then you probably won't get a response, but if it's master is a ferret-lover or somebody who really loves it they'll be trying everything they can think of to find the little guy!

if all else fails and you can't find its owner & don't get any hits on finding its people Rick and I would be willing to give a good home! we've got 2 girls of our own (don't worry, nearly all ferrets sold in pet stores are Marshal brand/breeder farm ferrets & are neutered before they are shipped to the pet stores. we've got a big enough cage to hold 4, so there would be room for him. if nothing else, and you can't keep him, let us know. we can make a run down that way & if they owner pops up in a couple weeks or so you'll know where to find him & could give them our phone#. :) had to throw the offer out. I know they're a handful, and if you're not already set up to keep him, the cage, food, hammock, litter, etc can run you easily upwards of $100 even if you shop on a budget. ferrets are high-maintenance critters, but worth every bit if you're patient. :)
