Winter has settled in with short cold days, chilling winds, and long dark evenings. It might be the coccooning this brings, but regardless of the source I've been feeling more creative recently.
Earlier this week, with the help of a book from the library, I taught myself to crochet. My grandmother used to crochet for hours on end and it's nice to finally understand what it was she was doing. I don't enjoy it as much as knitting though, and don't really like the fabric that it creates so I don't see myself doing much of it. Still, it's nice to learn how to do something new.
Yesterday I used some felt and made me a pair of slippers to keep my feet warm around the house. They are patterned after "bog shoes" of the 7th century Celts and are quite comfy. The felt was cheap but is not as warm as I'd like so I'm thinking of making another pair out of a heavier fabric, maybe with some insulative lining. Now that I know what I'm doing I might also adapt the pattern slightly as well.
I've also gotten out an old bit of cross-stitch and have been working on finishing it. It's a panel of Celtic knot-work, and although I'm not perfectly happy with the layout it is providing me with some enjoyable activity to while away the cold wintry hours.
On a completely different note, I have the day off today because it's the Queen's birthday. I've still not gotten my head around the idea of actually having a queen, but it's nice to have a paid day off...
