aside from strangely surreal and kind of nightmarish dreams i haven't had a real nightmare for at least five years or more. this week i've had three genuine nightmares. don't know what my subconscious is trying to tell me but it must be something. anyone good at dream interpretation? i'm just a novice in that area, so any help would be appreciated. i remember two of the dreams in detail and i think i should write them down before i forget about them. here goes:
dream 1: personal apocalypse
settings: a camp somewhere in sweden/my house even though it wasn't my house
persons: myself, my family, several junior high classmates as well as some high school ones.
dream: for some reason i went to a camp in the middle of nowhere to spend the summer there. there were a lot of people i'd went to school with there. after a while i got the impression that this actually was a center for indoctrinating people in some kind of strange religion. when i wanted to leave i was stopped by the people controlling the camp. they were dressed in really nerdish clothes and had a fake serene smile over their faces which really made me think of religious fanatics. i spent over a week in that place before i decided that i had to trick them to get away. i told them that i'd left an important religious text in my house and i needed to get it. after some argument i got to get it (by car, even though i haven't got a driver's license).
when i arrived at home i immediately felt something was wrong. i hadn't seen a person while driving and when i finally arrived at home the silence was ever present. i looked at the sky and realized i had been driving for an entire day. i'd started out that morning and now it was dusk. the sky had a pinkish/orange glow which i associated with forest fires. when i went inside the house i felt a terrible stench from all around me. the rooms were dirty as no one had been living there for years and i could see half eaten food lying about everywhere. i especially remember a kind of pie with a white topping, kind of looking like a giant mazarin.
i made my way to the second floor and then i realised this wasn't my house, even though i was certain it still was. you know, dream logic. well upstairs i opened a door to my sister's old room. there, on the floor, i saw five dead dogs lying in a circle. flies kept swarming around them and i couldn't bear myself to look any closer. i closed the door and suddenly realized that these dogs symbolized my family and that they had been murdered, most likely by the cult. then i awoke in cold sweats.
dream 2: another planet, another life
setting: a junior high reunion/another planet/an airplane
people/animals: myself, hannah petersson (a girl i went to grammar school with and haven't seen since), a siberian husky, person closely resembling john locke from "lost", a composite of various obnoxious guys i've met some time or another.
dream: i was at a junior high reunion in a building which was a mix between the old auditorium in my junior high and a corridor of the university building where i'm currently studying. i met hannah and was surprised to see her since i hadn't even lent her a thought for the last five years or so. suddenly i heard myself starting to discuss the impending exodus with her. it was a very serious discussion about what to do now when the planet was going to hell in a hen basket. neither one of us were rich enough to be able to afford a place on one of the space ferries bound for the new world. i remember hugging her to console her and then the dream changed location.
this time we were in an airplane cabin and everyone were nervous as hell. suddenly, a very obnoxious guy stod up in the center aisle and drew a gun. he forced his way into the cockpit and everyone cheered. the dream changed settings again and this time we found ourselves on a colony world somewhere in a nearby solar system. i knew that we had come there by high-jacking the airplane and forced ourselves passed the guards guarding one of the space ferries. some people had already arrived at the colony and had set up a kind of shanty town with one main building ever expanding with small cottages on every side. the planet was a gloomy environment consisting of marshes and a jungle-like forest. think a real nightmarish version of the everglades outside of miami. the sun never shone and i remember thinking how the plant life could survive without sunlight. there were no apparent animal life aside from the siberian husky someone had brought along for the ride.
i remember sitting in a recreation room in the main building discussing something when the husky started acting very strange. it was growling and snapping with its' jaws at things that weren't there. with me in the room was the obnoxious guy, still having the gun he had on the airplane. the husky went straight for him and having no other choice he shot it. the bullet went in the middle of the dog's two front legs and left a gaping hole. the husky still stood up though. the obnoxious guy got ready to fire again but before he had the chance some sort of bloody worm shot out from the gunshot wound on the dog. it was very quick and everyone panicked when seeing it. the situation got even worse when the worm started to spurt a head. now it was a worm with a replica of the husky's head. think the thing and you're pretty close to it. suddenly two more worms came out of the husky and started to sprout heads. this time however the heads were replicas of us in the room. somehow, i thought, this thing could mimic everything it saw.
we managed to flee the room and tell the other colonists about what we had seen. suddenly one of the colonists tripped and fell, scraping his hand. the hand instantly rotted and the rot spread to the rest of his body. after that event we realized that no one of us had gotten a single scrape on our bodies since settling on the planet. the obnoxious guy wanted to study this phenomena but everyone refused. the time setting in the dream changed to a couple of days later. the obnoxious guy went berserk with the rest of his ammunition, apparently having gone crazy. then i awoke.
why dogs? sure, i've seen a show about dogs recently but i hardly ever dream about stuff i've seen or read. this includes regular dreams. my regular dreams are usually surreal variations on everyday life, nothing this grim. and why the two apocalyptic themes? any jungian out there?
