I believe that the concept of "parasocial friendships" is only gaining traction in popular usage, although the term itself has been around for some time now.  (As is often true.) A lot of people in fandom say they miss discussion. Including me. You can still find it on tumblr, but there's less true interaction, more reblogging and sharing.
