Mulholland Drive, dir. David Lynch.

I love David Lynch films. I think the man is a genius, even if does confuse the crap out of me. I watched this on DVD last night, and needed several hours to process what I'd watched. I think my error lay in watching the interviews and extra stuff immediately after the film finished, b.c they confused me more than I usually am.

Now, I loved "Lost Highway". I think it is a fine film, full of all sorts of dark ideas and concepts and I can relate to it on a very surreal level. "Mulholland Drive" was captivating. The premise is rather simple: a love story between two women, which I have to agree with madame_muppet now I've slept on it, was an incredibly brave move on Lynch's behalf.

Lynch tends to push the boundaries of conciousness and ideas with his films. He fills them with quirky characters, odd moments of dialogue, that when taken alone make no sense, but as part of the greater whole, add dimensions to the work. "Twin Peaks" remains one of the finest tv shows ever made, "Dune" remains a highly unsung SF film, "Lost Highway" has more people hating it than loving it, "Wild at Heart" tends to make viewers uncomfortable.

I am going to have to mull this film over for a while. I loved it. It is visually stunning, the performances are flawless, the moods beautifully and delicately manipulated by Lynch's direction and the score by Angelo Badalamenti. This film is certainly one of the more straight forward pieces by Lynch, in some respects, I feel it represents a different maturity in 'arthouse' film making. A more...elegant maturity, if you will.

I feel the best way to sum this up, b.c it will definitely take a few days for the full impact of this film to be felt is to post a snippet of chat between myself and muppet from last night.

bravelittlemuppet: hmmmmm i find that film really linear
star: I enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as Lost Highway.
star: That is superb.
bravelittlemuppet: hmmmmmmmm
bravelittlemuppet: i felt Muholland Drive was an amazing film in terms of gender
star: He's the only director whose films I enjoy completely. There are no duds, IMO.
bravelittlemuppet: because to me it felt like the first time he came clean about women
star: Oh yes, its amazing on that plane.
bravelittlemuppet: its like he was suddenly admitting
bravelittlemuppet: i have no idea what it is to be a woman,. i have only ever created male fantasies of women and everything i have ever done and everything i can ever do will only ever be a male fantasy of what femininity is...
star: *nods*
bravelittlemuppet: it was like he had this realisation of that
bravelittlemuppet: and its amazing
bravelittlemuppet: i feel its his most logical and straightfprward film
bravelittlemuppet: aside from the "straight story"
bravelittlemuppet: that is
star: Yes
bravelittlemuppet: its really an accessible film, i am surprised when ppl tell me they didnt like it which a few have
star: It's a great film, I'm not disputing that.
star: I think, in retrospect, watching the interviews should have been left for a day or so.
star: B.c they clouded the vision for me.
bravelittlemuppet: hmmmm yeh
star: B.c he is such a funny man.
bravelittlemuppet: after i saw MD i spent days thinking about it
bravelittlemuppet: yeh he is
star: Who will NOT answer questions directly.
star: Except for "Do you think audiences will understand this film?"
star: to which he said, quite angrily, "Yes, of course they will!"
star: And I laughed my ass off.
