Okay, so premise: a god (or gods) exist.
Pipe down at the back, atheists. This is a mental excercise.
Second premise. One religious model of the universe from the Earth's history has been correct in all particulars.
Third premise. Only one religious model of the universe to date has been correct.
Why not? Syncretism is all the rage these days, but look it in perspective. It's all very democratic to say that "maybe everyone's a bit right, and God accepts all loving worship as long as it's sincere", but which religion has ever propounded that, since the beginning of history? Seriously. However spiritual and loving a religion is, some variant of "thou shalt have no god but me" always gets in there.
With me so far?
So, what guarantee is there that the One True Faith, the one real-world religion that actually Got It Right, is a current one? Seriously. What if the Egyptians had it right - in every respect - and no more pyramids are being built and no the Book of Going Forth By Day is never read over the dead any more?
Gonna be some mighty disappointed folk beneath us, being torn apart by demons and fading away to wisps.
Interesting thought. Should we just pick a religion from the past and hope? Kind of a Russian Roulette version of Pascal's Wager?
