Today was "
Clean Up Australia" day... Unfortunately, today was also 100°F weather in Perth! Unperturbed, the Kalamunda Bushfire Brigade did a clean-up of Pickering Brook Road! 6 crews picked up 2 completely full trailer loads ~ the trailer being the kind with a 4 foot tall cage around it's parameter - of plastic & glass bottles, cans, cigarette packets & butts, a laptop (actually ~ it was yours truly who picked up the laptop!), and..... *yudda yudda ~ you get the picture*
Each year, hundreds of thousands of Aussies hit the beaches, roads, parks, you-name-it and pick up *rubbish*. This year, according to ABC (Australia) some 9000 tonnes of rubbish was collected. 9000 tonnes!! FUCK that is amazing! We're talking about preventable rubbish here people!! You know, people DON'T HAVE TO THROW BOTTLES OUT OF CAR WINDOWS!. Still, with that said - I think Clean-up Australia Day is a wonderful programme and helps me (and lots of other Aussies) do just one little more bit to help.
Of course, the feeling of doing a good service for my community was eventually over-run by the over-hanging headache I'd acquired the day before.... which eventually left me semi-lying in my firey's uniform on a mound of bush near the end of Pickering Brook Rd. I am pleased to say I made it through the full 3 hours!! but shit was I glad to get home to the air conditioning!
