New Year's Resolutions...

Dec 31, 2003 20:52

I don't normally make resolutions...I don't need more promises to break, even to myself. However, this year, I think I have enough of my life in order (academenics...believe it or not, my family, friends) that I think I can make some resolutions--something achievable, which might actually make me into a better person in the process. Instead of listing one thing (which, with my personality, sets me up for failure), I have a list of several small things in different aspects of my life.

Physical:
This took some thinking. Unlike just about everyone else making resolutions, I don't really want to lose weight--my doctor would have a fit if the scale reads any lower. However, I do want achieve that mind-body conjunction I had during cross country, when I loved how strong and capable my body felt, and indeed was. So all of my resolutions in this aspect pertain towards that goal.

-start running again, SLOWLY (my problem isn't not training...its my tendancy to overtrain, which always leads to painful injuries)
-regular strength training (3 times a week for abs, 3 days per week in the weight room)
-cardio that I enjoy "a few" times a week (not putting a number on it: swing classes, riding lessons, midnight walks, possibly yoga classes, perhaps tkd?)

Emotional:
Always one of my the weakest/most turbulent aspects of my personality. I was a willful, stubborn, and slightly spoilt child who thought she could conquer the world on sheer determination alone. Some things never change--but I'm trying.

-be more patient
-learn to see things from other points of view, be less set in my ways
-learn to give myself a cool-off period (count to 10? 20? 100?) before I explode

Mental:
This is always one of my strengths, yet everything has room for improvement. The hard thing is to nail down exactly what I want to work on...there's so much I've yet to learn, experience, or try...

-Learn to become fairly proficient in a language (either French or Greek, depending on what I take during summer school).
-Read at least 20 books from my "Great books" list (mostly over the summer, though I can probably nail down 5 during the spring semester and break)
-Become very proficient in Greek culture and history (I've always wanted to know almost everything about something...with the fall semester in Athens--hopefully--I'll be able to do this).

Odds-n-Ends
-defeat ED (eternal darkness). Long story...let's just say that I'm not about to outwitted by a video game
-learn to make sushi. Well. I've already mastered the miso soup. Italian's in the bag.
-learn to make soufflees (don't ask...it's the challenge of haute cautre French cooking)
-Figure out how to put my hair in a French twist
-Automatically post on the correct diagonal (riding)
