Rory couldn't believe she'd let this lapse for so long.

Granted, she'd been busy, given that she'd been dispensing advice about boys and desserts, discussing classes and helping Luke with his homework. But still, there was no excuse for how she'd been slacking

"Go where you'll be happy," Luke said with a shy smile.

"It's harder than you'd think," Rory replied. "You were going to go to a military academy, though? What kind of military?"

"Imperial," Luke said. "I wanted to fly starfighters. I really, really wanted off of Tatooine. Joining the military seemed like the fastest way."

Rory frowned. "But wouldn't that have been bad? I thought the empire was bad."

[tatooine_doofus]

Luke's cheeks went red. "The problems of the Empire seemed to be very far away until they literally ended up in my front yard."

"Oh," Rory said, biting her lip. "Understandably. I mean, it's kind of easy to ignore it when it's not personal, right?"

"I'm ashamed of myself for thinking that way now, but most of my friends had left and gone to the Academy. The Empire seemed preferable to a life of moisture farming."

Rory nodded. "And you know, once you'd done your thing there, you'd go off and do what you wanted, right? The end justifies the means."

Luke shrugged. "I guess so," he said. "I hadn't really planned it much past 'get off of Tatooine.'" He bit his lip. "I think there's a lesson in there about being careful what you wish for."

"You sound like Anakin," Rory said quietly. "He hated it there, too."

"Did he?" Luke turned to look more closely at Rory. "How long did he live there? Uncle Owen never talked about him."

"He didn't like talking about it," she said softly. "He lived there until he was nine, when Obi-Wan and his old master found him, and figured out that he might be the fulfillment of a prophecy, and took him to the Jedi."

"Prophecy?" Luke repeated, eyes going huge.

Rory bit her lip. "That he would bring balance to the Force," she said. "He had a whole bunch of midi...things. I think the're midichlorines, or something. Anyway, they're little bitty thingies that indicate sensitivity to the Force. So they took him on to train him as a Jedi even though he was way, way too old."

"How old was too old?" Luke asked. "Nine was too old?"

"Most of the little Jedi I met were much younger than that," Rory said. "They started them when they were babies, mostly."
