review of Lost 6.11 - 'Happily Ever After'

There was a slight uptick in watchability with 'Happily Ever After'.  I say that not caring much for Desmond, nor these sorts of novelty episodes.  But I'll admit, it was nice seeing him again.  I found myself engaged in his story, and I loved that finally we started to get some sort of connection or crossover between the 'real' storyline and the flash sideways.

My biggest problem with this episode was the first half.  Charlie was an annoying shite and it just reminded me of how happy I am that he snuffed it years ago.  His cheesy Claire vision made made me want to barf, nearly as much as the ridiculous conversation about love that he has with Desmond in that bar.  Now, having seen the second half of the episode, I appreciate what they were trying to do here.  Love is definitely the trigger that's allowing these people to remember their 'other' lives'.  And I'm such a sap that I kind of love that.

But I still hated the first half of the episode.  Besides Charlie being annoying, it was just so slow, and too devoted to the 'ironic' flash sideways moments that the writers seem to adore so much (see: Mikhail gets shot in the eye in 6.10).  Though I of course enjoyed seeing Minkowski again.

The second half, on the other hand, was really pretty great.  We got Eloise Widmore (nee Hawking) acting just like her normal self -- which is pretty damn cool.  What is this woman?

And of course, Daniel was in it.  I miss Dan so, so, so much.  I love how Jeremy Davies played him.  Not crazy, but not quite 1996 douchey!Daniel, either.  It was recognisably the same character, and yet different, and I thought that was really cool.  Once again, Dan provides guidance to the perpetually confused and special Desmond, and that was a moment of flash sideways irony that I could handle.

Um, and oh yeah.  He loves Charlotte.  Sweet!  My ship is sailing in the flash sideways, how bad can they be?

Just after 'The Incident' aired last May, I started writing a fanfiction that took place in the alt!reality, and Dan was a musician rather than a physicist.  I wish I'd finished it so I could have the posted proof that I called it, haha.  Not like it was a tough call, I suppose.
