The frog that Alex brings home and keeps in the cracked aquarium lives for one week. She keeps it there for one more day after it stops breathing, because, as she says, it might be holding its breath, like it's underwater.
Ben lets her come to the foregone conclusion herself, because she's almost seven and she needs to learn about death sometime. But when he starts to explain, when she stoically comes to him holding the frog's thin body in her hands, she interrupts him with, "Daddy, I know. It's like Lynn." Lynn, the latest pregnant woman to die. "It's like Lynn, only there's not as much blood."

The sound of her name is like a prompt; like some distant bell ringing. She hasn't heard it in so long and it almost pulls her back from where she's been; where she has gone. Some kind of darkness yanks itself away from her eyes and she lowers her rifle; meets the surprised gaze of this man she remembers, whom she has saved without thinking because she doesn't have to think to know she should.
Claire, he calls her. Jin, she thinks, without speaking. And everything that she has forgotten because she can't stand to remember comes rushing back.

With one last quick appraisal of her appearance, Charlotte steps out onto the pavement from her car, tottering in the spiky heels she's already regretting. It's not having gone out for ages that's got her this far, meeting a man she's only heard about. He's supposed to meet her here, and when she doesn't see him, she's just the tiniest bit relieved that she won't have to start all over with this, after all.
Then a voice queries behind her, just a bit hesitant, "Charlotte Lewis?" and she turns with a yes and a smile and a feeling from his warm brown eyes that somehow, they've met before.
