Happy Birthday
firefred!! *big hug and birthday wishes*
I love watching the Olympics - both of them. I missed the Opening Ceremony (grrr) because we were driving to the cottage when they replayed it at 6pm on Friday, and I had to Google the medal tally to find out if Australia has won anything yet - on CBC they focus on the Canadians, which is to be expected and I like to know how they're doing, but when they're not covering the Canadians they turn to the Americans and I really don't care about how the Americans are doing, I want to know how the Aussies are doing! So I see we've won two gold and three bronze but I've no idea in what event or who won them. Do we have any of our amazing swimmers in this Olympics? I'm sick of hearing about Phelps. Why isn't Thorpy in it? (Or is he?)
I just have to tell you this, it's frightening. Last night CBC was playing the boxing (why the hell is boxing an Olympic sport?), so I switched to NBC where they had the gymnastics on (the commentators were really horrible by the way, playing up the so-called controversy about the ages of the Chinese gymnasts "Do they look 16? You be the judge... but we'll be discussing it later!" (please, even the 20 year old looked 14! Though the Chinese don't have birth certificates and I expect in some of those provinces no one knows how old they are) and giving the Romanians a hard time and implying that they don't work very hard like they used to and so on) - oh and they interviewed Bush! It was hilarious I couldn't stop giggling except to exchange stunned looks with Adam - that man has no idea what the hell he's saying half the time - where was I? Oh, right, so this ad for a new tv show came on and I don't normally watch ads but this one caught my eye.
The first caption is "From the producers of The Office" (that'd be the American one of course) - that's probably what caught my eye, and gave me that horrible sinking feeling in the stomach. There was a cringe-worthy group of two women and two men and the voice over "Australia's number 1 show comes to the US for the first time ever" and I could hear myself going "Oh no. No no no no no..."
Yes, you guessed it. They've done their own version of Kath and Kim and my god it is so barking up the wrong tree. They may have had some success, for the quirk factor, if they'd simply imported the show, but no, they've gone The Office on it. While they managed to make The Office into their own thing with debatable success, they've missed the whole point of Kath and Kim. They don't have that kind of ... demographic. It's a cultural thing. And it was painful just sitting through a quick ad for it. Oh it's so wrong, so wrong!
Speaking of tv shows though, we've been watching
Flight of the Conchords, about a couple of Kiwis in a band called Flight of the Conchords, who go to New York to be successful. Their manager is a lowly bureaucrat at the New Zealand embassy. It's really funny, and they totally take the piss out of themselves, New Zealand and Australia. It began on BBC radio but this is an 2007 American series (HBO). It's classic. I now need icons for it!
2 WEEKS TO GO! I'm so busy though. Because it's my first time doing a tax return in Canada (for 2007), I'm being audited - nothing scary, just fiddly and annoying. I'm still running around trying to find out about the Student Access Guarantee and how to get it (more money that is), but I have a lead, because on the weekend we went from our cottage to the cottage of relatives of Adam's dad, "the Lambs" we call them, three sisters and their families who have cottages on Georgian Bay, for dinner on Saturday, and one of them works for the Ministry of Education and gave me the name of someone who should be able to help me with the SAG thing *exhale*. Meanwhile I am going through the motions at work and I feel exactly like Fran from Black Books *points to icon*.
