Can you believe I only heard about this today?
Earth Hour, started in Sydney in 2007, has gone global, and Toronto is participating! It's voluntary, of course, so most people will ignore it. Maybe it's the neighbourhood I live in (steady-well-paying-job 30-something yuppies with small kids), but the impression I get is that people only care when it's convenient, or when they want to sound like they care. Then they hop in their cars to drive a block to get some milk. Which they get a plastic bag for.
Anyway, I could rant for hours about that but it wouldn't help. It's at 8pm on Saturday the 29th, and you're supposed to switch off all the lights, appliances etc. in your home for an hour. We'll certainly do it - though it's gonna be tricky getting to the plug for the oven, and we'll have to reset several clocks afterwards, but we're already pretty good with not leaving lights on or appliances like the DVD player.
'Course, that leaves the whole "what can you do for an hour in the dark on a Saturday night?" but I'm pretty sure I'll think of something... ;)
