Fruits Basket is a sappy shoujo series about a the daily life of the Sohma family, a family that has cursed blood running through it. The curse that runs through the family is that of the (Chinese) Zodiac, which basically means that when hugged by the opposite gender, or in some cases tired, weak or sleepy, they are transformed into their cursed half. This doesn’t really sound like such a problematic issue at first, but there’s a great stigma in this, plus it makes romantic entanglements/certain social situations a bitch to get through without someone noticing they’re actually kissing a seahorse.

The real stigma comes from the head of the family, Akito. Akito forbids them from letting their secret slip, and to basically avoid any and all attachments that may lead them astray from the close-knit family. Actually, Akito is a pretty special person who doesn’t want anyone’s emotions for someone outside of the family to overpower those they are meant to have for Akito. In fact, the curse makes the other family members drawn to Akito. And if they go against Akito’s wishes… well, let’s just say the doctor is missing the sight on one eye for a reason.

The turning point for the family is when a perfectly ordinary, kind-hearted girl named Honda Tohru accidentally discovers the family’s secret, and slowly discovers the secrets of the family as the family members learn to open their hearts to outsiders, despite Akito’s influence.

Oh, and there’s plenty of the homo, the crossdressing, the riceballs and the mental trauma in there as well. Plus, the dragon is a fucking seahorse.

Enter Ayame, brilliant fashion designer (his words), store owner, dedicated to the noble cause of Manly Romance; fulfilling men’s desires to dress other men up in women outfits and play out their fantasies. Basically, a self-made man, albeit an odd one. Ayame is a special case in the family. For reasons not clarified in either the anime or the manga, Ayame is the only one of the family who doesn’t live on the family property. The family’s property is actually quite large and encompasses different houses, yet Ayame lives on his own in the big city. Ayame is not much a fan of the oppression of his family and undoubtedly Akito found Ayame quite annoying, so it’s possible Akito sent Ayame away. Akito wouldn’t be the first to find Ayame annoying; practically everyone in the family dislikes having Ayame over for a prolonged period of time, simply because he doesn’t leave. Considering Ayame is such a side-character to the actual canon, I will also be stating what I believe to be logical assumptions and reading between the lines, which is something you definitely have to do with a character like Ayame.

Ayame is cursed as the Snake Zodiac, and if he’s hugged by females or gets cold (because snakes are cold-blooded, hurr hurr), he will transform into a tiny gray snake. To describe Ayame in one word, the best word would be… loud. Ayame has a loud voice and an even louder opinion, and is quite happy announcing his opinions to everyone who will listen, whether they want it or not. Despite his family suffering under a great deal of stress and mental scarring because of Akito’s hold on them and their loved ones, Ayame on the other hand seems happy all the time, no matter what is happening around him. He seems to think he himself is the most amazing thing alive, and flourishes everyone and everything with the most purple-prosey exaggerated compliments, and just keeps talking until Hatori, his cousin, tells him to stop, or he gets distracted by a shiny object.

In actuality, all cursed members of the family have a sort of defense mechanism, and for Ayame, appearing happy all the time and acting like he doesn’t give a shit is his defense mechanism. He doesn’t let anyone see what his weaknesses really are or how Akito can hurt him. He does show his true feelings to honest, warm and kind people, but not many people fill that requirement. He’s actually very insecure and inept at relationships and overcompensates as a result.

Ayame actually grew up more self-involved than he appears today, not caring that his brother Yuki, cursed by the Rat, wanted his attention and reached out to him. He only had eyes for himself, and didn’t realize other people could hurt as well. This is probably mostly due to his mother pushing her hopes and dreams on to him and him absolutely refusing to fit in her mold, so she turned her attention to Yuki, a sickly child who was more easily bendable to her psychological abuse. In the manga, when Ayame comes to Yuki’s school for support because he hears their mother will visit him, Ayame’s visit gives Yuki the courage to finally speak his mind. Whereupon their mother says she wishes she had never given birth to either of them, and although Yuki, who had always bent to his mother’s ways seems stunned by this, Ayame isn’t even fazed. It made Ayame focus on himself, and he was probably only relieved to have a brother so their mother would leave him alone.

Because of Hatori’s lack of luck in love (to put it mildly) and realizing slowly how much he hurt Yuki by ignoring him when Ayame was basically the only one he could reach for, he is realizing that people can get hurt and he has made a lot of mistakes that he wants to make up for. But his dramatic fashion and over eagerness to bond with Yuki or get any sort of reaction out of Yuki instead of having no relationship at all only makes Yuki more annoyed and confused on who his brother actually is, and pushes him away. Ayame really doesn’t know how to forge a bond between them.

At the end of the day, Ayame’s slogan is ‘If at first you don’t succeed…’, leading to a great deal of annoyance (which he is blissfully unaware of or simply doesn’t care about).

Sample: Oh my, what a wonderful place I have magically found myself in! Someone who was quite obviously a princess in a past life has granted me access to a place fitting of my enchanting presence!

However, becoming a farmer? That will not do, I’m afraid! No no, these fingers are too delicate and do too fine a job at the most expensive fabrics that I will not sully them with hard labour! Besides, it takes so much effort to make gardening clothing look presentable, let alone make it look as stunning as people were meant to look! No no, although I fully encourage manly romance in secret gardens, sweaty, dirty clothes will simply not do!

Oh, I know what I’ll do! I’ll put the heavy duty of creating all your clothes for you! Yes, it’s a perfect idea, if I do say so myself! Simply brilliant! I will focus all of my creative energy onto your bodies, so come to me and I will take care of all yours needs!
