Loyola Theatre Box Office

Loyola Theatre Box Office, originally uploaded by lavocado@sbcglobal.net.
I went to the NAAFA conference at the Marriot Hotel near the Los Angeles Airport last week. Before I could settle into conferring, I had to do the thing I do--explore the neighborhood with my camera. Westchester is a neighborhood close to the airport. It's another psot WW2 aircraft worker's suburb.

Once there was a movie theatre, the Loyola, on Sepulveda Blvd, Westchester's main commercial street. It was resplendent with neon and flashing light bulbs. Now it is an historical landmark, housing a medical office. The sign on the box office says "Parking in Rear." The main entrances to most of the businesses on Sepulveda Blvd. are in the back, where the parking is. Only those desparate souls with no cars walk down Sepulveda Blvd. In the days when the theatre was open, department stores lined the Boulevard. Now there are corporate chains. There are a Staples and an Office Depot within a block of each other. Once there was a big fancy art supply store, Flax, which used to serve the students at Otis College of Design (or whatever they are calling what used to be Otis Art Institute) It's gone, and I don't know where the students shop now.

Down on Lincoln Blvd, I found a Ralph's that sold something I'd never seen before--non-fat half-and-half. I went back to the conference and wrote a poem about it. More later.
