Yesterday I visited the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna. This was my favorite:
And this was the most impressive for me
It's all made of ivory! And the structure is partially deep enough that a whole leg can be seen (for those who know the metric system: up to 23 millimeters deep.
Since the end of march some of the most important pieces of the private collection of the Princec of Liechtenstein are back in Vienna where they used to be until 1945. Among them: Rubens: Decius-Mus cycle, Mary's assumption, Venus in front of a mirror, Mars and Rhea Silvia etc
De Fries: sculptures of St. Sebastian and Christ etc
Benzi: sculpture of an infant Bacchant and Amor, copy of Michelangelo's Bacchus etc
And one Rembrandt: Amor with a soap-bubble

CLICK HERE I normally wouldn't be that upset. Ten days ago I've seen a wonderful Rembrandt exhibition at the Albertina in Vienna, Dürer at the same place months ago and so on. It was so exciting because it also was some sort of homecoming of one of the worlds largest private collections (In 1938 the Liechtenstein flew to Vaduz where they still live. In 1945, shortly before the end of WW2 they brought the whole collection there too.). I've never been that excited before going to a Museum. And the pieces there where worth it. I spent almost four hours there and I would have staid longer but I had to catch a train. The building itself, the Garden-palace is worth a visit as Johann Adam Andreas I. employed some of the best architects and artist for it's construction such as Fischer von Erlach, Martinelli, Franceschini, Pozzo, Bussi, Giuliani etc. And Hans Adam II spends a lot of money for the renovation that is still going on, Rottmayr's Frescos in the staircases suffered from water coming though the roof. Well I better stop now an just tell you: Come and see yourself!
A hard time approaches: summer holidays at the opera. The only positive thing is that it lasts one month shorter than in NY or at some other houses and that I already have tickets for next year. This will keep me alive during summer. Oh, yes, of course, the Classic Music Festifal in August is a very important infusion for me too!
