Chapter Two
“Now, don’t think just because you’re not sick anymore doesn’t mean it can’t come back, Donghae.” It was two weeks after his remission and Donghae was getting lectured by his mother and his brother, Donghwa. “What do you mean? Of course I can still get sick.” Donghae asked, clearly not understanding the difference between the flu and cancer. “Donghae, your body is really weak, and it’s always going to be. It means you are to never ever smoke… hear me?” His mother stressed this one. He nodded. “And you have to be real careful with getting a cold or something. Also, when you’re older, you probably shouldn’t drink alcohol much.” He nodded again. “But, mom, I don’t get it. Didn’t they get rid of the bad thing? Isn’t it out of me?” His mother gave a nervous glance at Donghwa. “Well, sweetie… it’s gone for now. But it can come back someday.” Donghae began crying. “Momma, I promise I’ll do all of that. I promise, just make sure it won’t come back?” All his mother could was comfort her son by shushing him and running her fingers through his hair. “Let’s hope it doesn’t, Hae. Let’s hope it doesn’t.”
Donghae woke up crying that morning. When he realized that he wasn’t ten and he wasn’t back in Mokpo, he silently thanked god. Then he threw a punch at his pillow. He was sick of having these dreams. He glanced over at the clock and realized that his family should be arriving in an hour. He got a shower and made something to eat. He didn’t eat much though; he had lost his appetite lately. Not too much longer and his brother came barging through his door. “Donghae!” He yelled. Donghae lifted his head off the counter and a grin spread across his face. “Hyung!” He yelled back, running to clobber his brother in a hug. “I missed you, Donghwa!” He cried into his brother’s shoulder. “I miss you too, Hae.” He said, soothingly. “Where umma?” Donghae asked, looking around. “Oh… she didn’t come. She said she was ‘too old for the trip’ or something like that.” Donghae frowned at this. Of course he was thrilled to see his brother, but he wanted to see his mom, badly. “Oh, here is some cash mom sent for you. She told me to make sure you buy clothing. You know her.” Donghwa said, rolling his eyes. “Alright, thanks. So… how are things going at home?” Donghae asked, plopping down on his couch. Donghwa sat beside him with a grin slowly painting his face. “You’re never gonna believe it, Hae.” He said, sparking much interest in Donghae, who raised his head and gave him a questioning look. “What?” He asked his brother. “I met this girl last year… and we’re engaged now!” Donghwa said, excitedly waiting for his brother’s response. “What? How come I got no invitation?” Donghae asked, sitting up and giving his brother a, now, full out, serious look. “Calm down little brother.” Donghwa said, ruffling the boy’s hair. “We aren’t sending any out. You know, it costs money, especially to send one here. So I’m telling you now.” Donghae didn’t relax until now. “Okay. You’re forgiven. When is it?” He asked. “Two months.” His brother replied. “But, you don’t have to be there if it doesn’t work out with your new job.” Donghae rolled his eyes. “No way am I missing my own brother’s wedding. And to hell with work, anyway. My boss is a dick anyway.” Donghwa laughed at this, because working for Cho Industries, that wasn’t surprising. “At least it’s not that Cho Kyuhyun guy. I heard he’s a real prick.” Donghae sat up again, glaring at his brother. “Uh… hyung, it is!” Donghwa made a noise of disapproval. “I’m sorry to hear that.” He frowned. “Now, get your butt out of this house and get some new clothes!”
And so Donghae did. He bought one suit and some casual clothes. Enough, he thought, until he’d get his first paycheck. Besides, he knew how to wash clothes. He was walking back home when he passed a coffee shop that looked very, very appealing to his stomach. ‘Oh, what the heck’ he thought to himself. He walked inside and sat down. He ordered a sandwich and some coffee. He heard the door open, but didn’t mind to look. “Donghae!” He heard that annoying, bratty voice call out his name. He gave him one look and looked away. “What are you doing here?” Kyuhyun asked, sitting down across from Donghae. “None of your business, so leave.” He replied, not looking up from the book he was reading. “You should be nicer to me, Hae, you know, since I am your boss and all.” Kyuhyun pointed out. Donghae slammed his book shut. “Okay, so you’re my boss. I’m still older than you. And since when did I say you could call me ‘Hae’?” He asked, kind of hurt that someone else was calling him by his brother’s nickname for him. Kyuhyun let out a cold laugh. “Since I decided too.” He glanced at the bags sitting by Donghae’s chair. “Could it be? You bought new clothes?” He scoffed. “Where did you ever find the money for that?” Donghae felt like punching the brat. “My brother came to town for the weekend. Now, just do us both a favor and leave, mkay?” Donghae said in a mocking tone. Kyuhyun rolled his eyes. “Whatever.” He said, and got up to leave. He gave one last glance back at Donghae and noticed a tear rolling down his face. He instantly regretted being so harsh.
When he got home, Donghwa was passed out on the couch and he decided that he’d go to sleep too, considering the awful headache he had acquired. He must have been tired, because he didn’t wake up until the next afternoon. He went into the kitchen, rubbing at his head. “Donghae, you slept for like… ever.” He said, making Donghae laugh a little at his description skills. “I dunno, hyung. My head hurts really badly.” He frowned. His brother gave him a worried look. “Well, take some medicine. I’m going to have to leave in a few minutes to make it back to Mokpo in time.” Donghae wanted to cry. He didn’t want him to leave. He didn’t want to have to deal with that douche Kyuhyun alone. “Okay.” Donghae whispered. Those few minutes passed all too quickly. Donghae gave his brother one last hug. “I’ll see you in two months.” Donghwa cheered, getting into his car. “See ya.” Donghae mumbled. He waved the car goodbye and went back into his apartment, only to go back to sleep. He set his alarm for six. Oh, tomorrow should be delightful. Monday: first day at work.
