Chapter One
“Well, Mrs. Lee, I’m glad to say that your son’s cancer seems to be retreating. It all should be in full remission by the end of next month.” The doctor said, patting a smiling, ten year old Lee Donghae on the back. His mother could only smile to hear that the money they forked up for treatment paid off. “That’s extremely great news to hear, doctor. Thank you for taking such good care of him.” She smiled to the doctor and grabbed her son’s hand, leading him through the doors of the hospital and into the world he hadn’t seen for so long. “Well, what do you want to do, sweetie? Your choice.” Mrs. Lee beamed at her son. “Uhm. We can go get ice cream! And we can walk in the park! And… mom, can we maybe get a puppy sometime?” He rambled on and on, but then stopped. “Momma, I want to see dad. Where’s dad?” He asked, now realizing that his father hadn’t come to see his release. She frowned at him. “Sweetie, daddy…. Daddy’s gone now. He’s in heaven with grandma.” She said, trying to make it easy for him. “W-why’d he leave? I didn’t even get to say goodbye…”
“And this is when I wake up.” The now, twenty two year old Donghae says, staring at the floor. “Yes, yes. And you say you have this dream… rather nightmare… every night, right?” The psychologist asks, scribbling on his notepad. “Mhm.” He mumbles. “I think that, perhaps, this dream is trying to tell you something, warn you of something. Or, maybe you’re just going through a hard time, and bad memories are starting to make themselves remembered?” The man suggested. Donghae glanced up at the psychologist. He didn’t feel like telling him everything that’s been going wrong, and just replied with a, “Hm. Maybe. What can I do for it?” The psychologist sat still for a moment, as if deeply pondering something. “I mean, I can give you medication that helps you not dream at all during sleep, but, I mean, I don’t think you’d want to go to all the trouble. They’re kind of expensive too.” At this, Donghae sighed. He could barely bring in enough money to pay the rent for his apartment, let alone some stupid pills. “Uh… any other options?” The doctor shrugged his shoulders. “The way most of us fix things… be social… make friends.” Donghae smiled and nodded. “Thanks, sir. I really should be going now.” He began walking home, with the guy’s suggestion replaying in his head. “Be social… make friends.” How could he do that when he spent the majority of his time working? He already had to drop out of school. He shook it off, however, and kept walking to the place he had a job interview.

“Mr. Cho, sir, they need you in the interviewing room.” Kyuhyun raised his head and looked at his secretary. He sighed. “Ah, yes. Another unsuccessful interview this will be.” He grumbled and set the stack of papers he was reading down. “If my dad calls, tell him I’m on my way.” He said, passing his secretary’s desk and heading for the elevators. The interviewing room was actually a bit intimidating. It looked like an interrogation room that you see on crime shows. Kyuhyun didn’t actually sit in for the interview, he watched it from a room beside it on a TV. He wanted people to be honest, not suck ups. Afterall, they would be working for his company, which was one of the biggest in Korea. The first person was really boring, as was the second. He honestly contemplated staying for the next three. He glanced at his watch, noting that he only did have time for one more before he had to meet his father for lunch.
He watched on the screen as the skinny kid with brown hair walked into the room and sat down. He had no papers, and he wasn’t even wearing a suit or anything remotely nice. “Waste of my time.” Kyuhyun muttered under his breath. “So, uhm.. Mr. Lee, tell us a little bit about your background.” The interviewer demanded. Donghae cleared his throat. “My name is Lee Donghae and I’m twenty two. I was born in Mokpo. My dad died when I was ten, and I came to Seoul when I was eighteen to find a job to help my family. I graduated from high school and I went to college for two years, but I had to drop out because of financial problems.” The interviewer made a funny look, as if wondering why this kid was even here. Donghae didn’t fail to notice either. “And just because I only had two years of college doesn’t mean any four year graduate is any smarter than me. I have what most people don’t; common sense. And unlike half the people you’re interviewing today don’t need, nor do they want this job as much as I do, I can guarantee that.” Something with the way he talked sparked interest in Kyuhyun. He now paid full attention to the screen in front of him. “Alright. Now, do you have any experience working at this kind of job?” Donghae knew his chances were slim now. “No, but I’m sure it’s not that confusing. I’m willing to work hard, though.” Kyuhyun listened to more of the interview, until he stood from the couch he was on. This was all done subconsciously. He didn’t even realize what he was doing until he was standing in the interviewing room, pointing at the boy in the chair. “Him. I want to hire him.”
The interviewer stood up and walked to Kyuhyun. “Mr. Cho? You want him for the job? The boy is a lost puppy. He won’t even survive here.” He whispered low enough for Kyuhyun to hear, but so Donghae couldn’t. Kyuhyun only shook his head. “You start next week.” He said, looking at the boy. Donghae’s face lit up. For once, something was going right with his life. “Oh, and… make sure you show up in something… half decent.” Kyuhyun scoffed, giving the boy a disgusted look. And there he went and ruined the happy moment. He got the job, but his boss was a total dick. Great.
When he got home, he made an excited call home to his mother and brother back in Mokpo. “Mother! You’ll never believe it! I got a job at Cho Industries today.” There was silence, some whispering, and then he could hear his brother cheering in the background. “This is great, sweetie. We’re proud of you.” Donghae smiled to himself, but then frowned. “Yeah, one problem, though. I need new clothes.” He said, picking up his wallet and frowning even more at the three twenties that his eyes were laid upon. One twenty for savings, one for food, and one for emergency. “Darling, it’s okay. We’ll come to visit and help you out, yeah? When do you need some new stuff by?” He heard his mother say. “Monday.” He sighed. He really didn’t want his mother going through all the trouble of coming to Seoul. “Okay, hun. We’ll see you tomorrow, yah?” And she hung up. His mother was smart. She knew he’d protest, so she didn’t give him the time to do it. Frustrated, Donghae hung up the phone and headed out the door for some food.
It was cold. No, it was freezing. It wasn’t this cold earlier, but only because the sun was out. The sun had set by now, and Donghae found himself shaking uncontrollably. “Not good. Not good.” He said to himself, as he tried to hurry his way home. Winter was nearing, and he really needed a heavier jacket. He was so going to catch a cold, and then get scolded by his mother tomorrow. He sighed, noticing just how truly far he was from his house. Nevertheless, he kept walking.

Kyuhyun’s ‘lunch’ with his father didn’t end up being lunch, but rather dinner. He told his dad about the many things that had happened within the past month. “Oh, father, you should really see the poor, pathetic trash I hired today. He’s not going to last one week at the company.” Kyuhyun chuckled, making his dad shake his head. “I don’t understand why you waste time making people realize how low there life is.” His dad didn’t mind amusement in the waste of time and money on poor people. Kyuhyun liked to mess with people, though. He loved to show them how much he had and they didn’t, even though he was only twenty, and most of the people he hired were older than him. “Oh, and dad, I met this girl a couple weeks back. I think you will really approve.” This time, the glare from his father was almost unbearable. “Cho Kyuhyun. You know what I said about women. They only want your money. I forbid you to see this brat any more. I told you already, son, I will find you a proper girl, and the once you have a boy child, I will set up the divorce.” Kyuhyun’s face heated up with anger. Anytime his father reminded him of his, so called, marriage plan for him, he wanted to hit the old man. “I’m not doing what you did to mom. You don’t believe in love, but I… I do, father. And it’s something I want someday.” His father looked as if he would kill Kyuhuyn right there and then. “You will do as I say, Kyuhyun, because I can and will take everything you have away from you.” Kyuhyun couldn’t take it anymore. He stood up and bowed to his dad. “It was nice catching up with you again, father.” And he left to the safety of his car, where he could scream at no one to relieve his anger.
A few minutes into his drive was when his eyes caught the sight of that poor kid he had hired earlier walking on the sidewalk in the same clothes he wore earlier. Kyuhyun got even more angry, and he didn’t know why. “Stupid fucking idiot.” Kyuhyun grumbled and pulled the car over. Donghae stopped and looked at the car, confused. Kyuhyun stepped out, with the most intense glare he had ever seen. “Get in the car, you idiot.” Kyuhyun half yelled. Donghae was truly afraid of what would happen if he didn’t, so he stepped around to the other side and got in. Kyuhyun threw open his door, got in, and slammed it closed. “What the fuck are you doing? Walking around in sub-zero temperatures with this pathetic excuse for a coat on? You really are stupid, aren’t you?” Kyuhyun immediately scolded Donghae, but the man didn’t take it. “Listen here, prissy pants. I know all about you Cho Kyuhyun. You’ve been rich since the day you were born. Hell, you’re crib was probably solid gold. And you’ve gotten everything you’re little spoiled ass has ever wanted. And most people probably take your shit, but not me. And I don’t care if this costs me my job, because I’d rather stay dirt poor than work for a prick like you. You can’t just go around, yelling at people because they don’t have as much money as you.” Donghae huffed out, before exiting the car and continuing his walk down the street. Great, now his mother and brother were definitely going to hate him.
Kyuhyun stared at Donghae’s retreating figure, not in anger, but in shock. No one had ever said anything like that to his face before, and strangely, he didn’t feel upset or angry. He felt… guilty. He started the car and sped up, parking it again and chasing after the boy. Donghae swirled around, completely fed up. “what the hell do you want?!” He screamed. Kyuhyun looked at his feet for a second. “I-I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have called you an idiot.” He mumbled. Donghae laughed, and turned to keep walking. “Please! Let me give you a ride home, at least.” He pleaded. Donghae turned around, with a sad look on his face. “Why? You want to mock my home too?” Kyuhyun felt terrible from the look on his face. Usually, he would have given up by now and fired him. But, this guy, he was so different. Kyuhyun shook his head. “It just wouldn’t be good to miss your first day of work because you caught a cold.” Donghae really wasn’t this stupid. He’d accept the ride, but he knew there had to be some kind of evil plan behind it. “Fine.” He scoffed, getting back into the car.
The drive started out silent, until Kyuhyun spoke up. “I really am sorry… uh… Mr. Lee?” He stuttered, only to be interrupted. “My name is Donghae.” The other boy grumbled, still looking out the window. “Okay, I’m really sorry, Donghae-sshi. But, everything you said about me is true.” He mumbled the last part, but Donghae didn’t fail to hear it. “Haha. Why on earth would you agree with me?” Donghae said, his tone still cold. He looked out the window and realized that they were already at his apartment. “I… don’t really know yet, but I just… I want us to be friends. I think I have a lot I can learn from you.” Kyuhyun said, his voice sounding most sincere. “Whatever.” Donghae said, getting out of the car. “Start by dropping the pricky attitude.” And with that, Donghae walked into his house, leaving a very puzzled Kyuhyun sitting in his car, taking the boy’s words into consideration.
