Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back

I feel bad about neglecting my livejournal, but if I wrote more often my entry would consist of: same old shit, different day. Actually, there is some interesting stuff going on, so here goes. School is less stressful than it used to be. I just completed the research report for my annual training grant renewal. Last year, I didn't have any usable data and almost got dropped from the program, but this year I have some promising preliminary data on a few projects that have emerged from my efforts, just the first pieces to big puzzles. I've been working on a project that will produce a first-authored manuscript (soon!) regardless of the result. I fought to be first author because 1) I did all the work, and 2) what I couldn't do (computer programming) I farmed out to my boyfriend and the undergraduate minions of the engineering department. The pressure is still on to turn my other projects into papers. My dream is for my committee to ask me--maybe even this time next year--"When do you want to graduate?" Ok, it probably won't happen, but a girl can dream.

In other news, as a Christmas present to my BF, who is wonderful in so many ways (corny, yes), I want to take us (ok, it's a gift for me too) to the Niagara Ice Wine Festival at the end of January. A hotel room with a Jacuzzi, a smorgasbord of dessert wine...what complicates this plan is that his qualifying exam is sometime at the end of January, the date for which has not been announced. Arrggh.
