“Okay,” Peter said reasonably, his voice caught between incredulity and a strained sort of amused (??? Neal hoped) anger, “Let me get this straight. You lived in Scotland-“
“I wouldn’t really say I lived there,” Neal cut in with a smile, “I didn’t actually see much of it at all and didn’t really interact with any Scots and I really feel as if you should get an actual feel for the place before you can say you’ve lived there.”
“-you went to school at Hogwarts-” Peter pressed on, ignoring Neal completely.
“My parents wanted the best,” Neal quipped by way of explanation, “And if the best meant uprooting us to go halfway across the world, then so be it.”
“Neal shut up,” Peter said exasperatedly.
Neal raised both eyebrows but kept his mouth shut, looking at Peter with something like a mischievous smile in his eyes. Peter immediately didn’t trust it.
“You were expelled,” Peter concluded, giving Neal a measuring look. Out of all the revelations he been given this morning, he found this particular fact the least surprising. Neal just looked back at him and didn’t say anything at all, leaned against his office door with his arms crossed over his chest, this stupid little enigmatic smile hovering on his lips.
“Neal, your records say you attended Lansing High School,” Peter said evenly, already feeling the effects of a Caffrey-induced headache beginning at his temples.
“Well,” Neal replied lightly, and he rocked forward conspiratorially, “My records say a lot of things.”
