One-week wonder progress report

Jan 06, 2009 22:37

Dad dropped Mom off at 6:30 this morning on his way to work. By the time the baby and I got up, she had cleaned the kitchen and cooked breakfast! We spent the morning at the grocery store, after which she alternately played with the baby and cooked dinner. I love my mom. I spent the day lamenting not having asked her to stay with me when the baby was born!

So I had time to make quite a lot of progress on the ballgown bodice. Clipped and notched the seams; made bone casing and attached boning; attached the bodice and lining; pressed, trimmed and notched the seams; turned the whole thing right side out and pressed it flat. Since I skipped sleeves, I basted around the armholes (lining and bodice separately) to give me a guideline for turning under the edges, which I'll have to do by hand since I don't want any topstitching. Normally I adore topstitching and edgestitching, but I don't believe it's period (no period directions I've ever seen call for it).

Not a bad day's work. As near as I can figure, all of this took a little over four hours. It's hard to track because I was working in spurts between meals (mine and the baby's). Which is probably better for me anyway in terms of body mechanics.

Still to do: Finish the armholes. Buy buttons; make buttonholes and attach buttons. I could stop there, bare minimum. But I'd like to trim it, even just a little around the neckline. Hopefully I can make it out to Sewing Studio and even more hopefully they will have something nice!

To finish the ensemble, I'll also want gloves and something to put in my hair; maybe a shawl as stellrchef suggested. I won't have time to shop around, so I hope to find these at either Sewing Studio or at The Last Stand vendors.
