Oh LJ, how I've missed you. Seems today was too event-filled to leave to the quick few line status updates of Facebook. So, here I am again.
Today was L's first day of kindergarten. For weeks she'd been asking every day how much more time she had until she got to start "big school". Every day, she would cheer as the count got lower and lower. Unlike most kids who can't sleep the last night before school starts she fell right to sleep eager to wake up early and start the biggest day of her life to date.
We picked out outfits, for her and Mia last night so they would be all ready for me to iron. Backpacks were filled and lunches planned. They both took some time to wake up in the morning. One had had a bad dream and thus a hard time sleeping and the other just didn't want to leave bed. The morning was not without event. As I was eating my breakfast and they were upstairs getting teeth brushed I heard a scream from upstairs. My first thought was that they would not make it through the morning without arguing. I was hoping for better this morning, but that is their status quo. I waited a minute and the scream was apparently a solitary one. Another minute later I hear running feet and Mia comes downstairs and throws her skirt at me and yells "Fix it!". Somehow or other she had got a huge blob of toothpaste on her new skirt. I told her with the time we had and the size of the stain there was no way I could fix that in time for school and she'd have to pick out something else to wear.
The rest of the morning and getting the girls off to school was uneventful, thankfully. I was a little heartbroken at seeing my baby girl off, but I managed not to cry.
Got my semester's financial aid and my books ordered for my Fall term. Taking Economics and Finance and then one more semester I believe until graduation. I don't want to celebrate it too soon as I still can't believe school is going this quickly.
Even managed to take care of some personal business to super clean our credit in preparation for our new house purchase. Tracked down some old accounts and got stuff paid off (yay for me!). It was super easy and made me feel super good!
Shortly after 3pm I got a phone call from daycare. On the other end I hear "You picked L up from school today, right?" "uh, no" then, "oh, dear. She isn't here. I don't know where she is. Okay, I'll unload these kids and try to find her." Yeah. I commenced to freak out. I yelled to my boss I was leaving, shut down at the office, packed up and ran for my car. It took me a minute to remember the school's number, but I got it and called them trying to figure out where the heck my baby was. All I could think of was that my baby was wandering around inside the school, or worse, down the street trying to find her way home. Halfway to my car and on hold with the school while they look to see if she's in the office the daycare calls back with "I got her. I was just about to unload the other kids when they brought her running up the sidewalk." I swear that this all took at least 15 minutes, but when I just now checked my phone records, turns out it was only 4 minutes between those 2 phone calls.
My nerves were already shot and since I'd already packed up my desk I just went to get the girls and work from home the rest of the day. I let myself calm down a bit before walking into the daycare. Her school bus driver was not there but between the other teacher and the girls I was able to get the story. I also took the girls back to the school to point out to me what had happened. Apparently, L's teacher had taken her to the wrong place with all the general pick-up kids instead of the daycare kids. Mia had seen her but couldn't get her attention to tell her to come to the other spot. I am very happy with the daycare's handling of the situation. They hadn't left the parking lot without making sure all the kids were checked in. Not so happy with the teacher. I may have given her some leeway if she was new, but she isn't and she teaches kindergarten. Needless to say, we will be speaking in the morning.
Everything ended up just fine. We went to Braum's for dinner and our ice-cream-following-school-events tradition.
Went to the store to get ingredients for a cookie order Mia has for gymnastics fundraising. We WERE going to bake, but I forgot the butter so I guess we'll bake tomorrow.
Just finished the mountain of paperwork that is parent's first day of school homework and vow that tomorrow will be less eventful.
