When ever someone mentions 'guitar heroes', I (and most?) people instantly think of Eric Clapton, Mark Knofler, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and several others.
But what about some other absolutely incredible underrated guitarists? There are so many great guitarist in the world, so many that a simple LJ post could not even start to scratch the surface, let alone start a holy war about this guy is better then that guy. Sure, there are tons of good guitarist, but few just jump right out and make me listen purely for the guitar playing. My point of this post is to talk briefly bout a few who I think are underrated and/or unheard of.
What about
Jimmy Vaughan, mostly know as the guitarist for
The Fabulous Thunderbird's. His brother Stevie once said 'If I could only play as good as my brother'. Probably the best praise someone could give him.
Sonny Landreth is probably best known as the guitarist for
John Haitt... yet you've probably never heard of him let alone know that over a decade ago this man won MANY awards for a solo album even fewer have heard of. At one point I was even buying up cheap used copies of 'Southward Bound' for guitar loving friends purely because they needed to hear this guy.
Michael Hedges... is well... in a class of his own. The first time I heard his playing I swore there were 2 or 3 guitarist on stage with him. Nope! all guitar parts (and sometimes even percussion) is played by him on a single 6-string acoustic all at once. He was also
Until recently, I thought
Lindsey Buckingham was just an average guitarist for
Fleetwood Mac. One night while listening to Big Love on 'The Dance' I changed my mind. The song is originally off of 'Tango in the Night' which I personally don't like too much, as it is a very uninspiring collection of songs, especially when compared to something like 'Rumors'. However, the acoustic version on 'The Dance' is amazing. Lindsey might not be the most accomplished guitarist, but he has a knack for making complex sounding guitar riffs. After looking at the tab for Big Love, it looks pretty simple, though I still cannot play it :)
So why this post down guitar hero amnesia lane? My friend
thndrstd just sent me an email says that
Jeff Healey died yesterday at the ridiculously early age of 41. Jeff Healey had a few hits ages ago, though personally I think he really shows his best when doing classic covers. To this day, my favorite version of the Beetles 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' is his version.
I should stop this post now... I got work to do. Anyone wanna add there guitar hero to this short list?
