Summary: Lieutenant Commander Steven McGarrett, a Navy SEAL on a mission far away, and Detective Danny Williams, single father living in Hawaii, never realised how much their lives could change by a chance encounter with a dog. Two completely seperate lives, brought together by one dog.
Previous Chapter. The early morning sunshine awoke him, like every morning, the Navy SEAL arose with the sun to start his workout routine. Unlike every other morning however, this time his house was home to some guests, Steve carefully walking around his home to ensure he didn’t wake any of them. It was weird, having Danny, Grace and Captain sleeping over for the night, but it was definitely something he could see himself getting used to.
Things had slowly changed over the following few months. Steve and Danny continued to meet up as often as they could, whenever Danny wasn’t busy with a case or Steve wasn’t required on base. Most of the times Grace and Captain were also present, Steve sticking to his word and not trying to take his dog away, but there were a few times that Danny and Steve met up alone. It was becoming a regular thing now, either when Grace was having a sleep over or was away for school, Steve and Danny would go out for a beer or two, and if they were stuck at home, Steve would bring over food and they would relax and unwind together.
Steve used his time in the water to think about everything that had changed. He wasn’t sure what to think when Danny had approached him, asking to spend a few nights at his place while his own house was getting its floors done. Steve had quickly agreed, readying his two spare bedrooms for them, but the first night had found Steve and Danny staying up late out on the lanai drinking a few beers. When they had finally decided to call it a night, Danny leaning on Steve to climb the stairs, both men hesitated at their bedroom doors.
“Steve… I’m… I’m not the only one feeling something going on here right?” Danny had mumbled.
“No… No you’re not…” Steve agreed, hand coming up and hovering over Danny’s cheek.
Danny leaned into the touch for a moment before quickly backing away, “but we can’t, right?” Danny sighed, “I mean, there’s Grace and you’re never really here, you said so yourself,” he added.
“Right…” Steve nodded, “Goodnight then,” he said before closing the door behind him.
The following days was strained between them, neither man knowing how to handle the situation they were in but desperately trying not to let it affect Grace in any way. Steve continued to push through the water, desperately trying to push through all the confusion in his mind. Everything Danny had said that first night made sense, they couldn’t really try anything more serious for Grace’s sake and because of his military career. But it didn’t mean he had to be happy about it.
Steve was met on the beach by Captain, the dog faithfully waiting for him right at the edge of the water. With a quick wipe down and a change, Steve and Captain set off on a brisk run. It was something else, having company on his morning runs, Steve not quiet used to it but definitely enjoying it. Grace and Danny were awake by the time he returned home, something else he wasn’t used to, having breakfast ready for him after his workout.
“Good morning Uncle Steve!” Grace greeted, rushing up and hugging the sweaty man before running away laughing.
“Morning Gracie!” Steve called back after her.
“Good work out?” Danny asked, handing him a warm cup of coffee, the two men having already worked out their routine in the few short days spent together.
“Yeah, thanks,” Steve nodded. “What's the plan for today?” he asked after taking a sip.
“I’ve got to head into the office for a while, I was wondering if you’d be able to watch Grace?” Danny asked.
“Yeah, we’ll take Captain to the park, maybe you can meet us for lunch?” Steve suggested, getting the plates out for breakfast for everyone.
“Sounds good, I should be done by then,” Danny nodded, both men moving around the kitchen with the ease of years of familiarity they didn’t have.
“Gracie! Breakfast is ready!” Danny called, Grace running down the stairs fully dressed, Captain coming in close from behind. “Get Captain’s breakfast ready, will you Monkey?”
Once everyone was settled and eating, Danny told Grace what was going to happen, Grace becoming even more excited. “Awesome!” She cheered, running off as soon as her dishes were in the sink to get ready to leave.
“She’s an awesome kid,” Steve commented once she was gone.
“Yeah…” Danny nodded, “You get why I can’t right? Because of her, I have to protect her, she was too young when her mum left us, but she’d be crushed if something happened now, and I can’t let that happen…” he sighed.
“I get it, I do. But you’re really ready to sacrifice any chance of your own happiness, even if it’s not with me, just to protect your daughter from something that might not even happen? What happens when she’s older and realises that you never met someone else because of her? How do you think she will feel then?” Steve reasoned.
Danny didn’t respond, mulling over Steve's words in his head. He had thought the exact same thing many times before, he knew Steve was right and yet he still couldn’t open himself up, he couldn’t risk it, and maybe he was just using Grace as an excuse. When Grace’s mother had left them, he had been crushed and Danny didn’t know if he was ready to risk the same hurt again.
“Ready to go Baby Girl?” Steve asked, snapping Danny out of his thoughts, the blond man turning to look at his daughter who was standing by the doorway, backpack over her shoulder and dog standing dutifully by her side.
“Yup!”
“Alright, give me ten minutes to shower and change and then we can go,” Steve chucked, dumping his own dishes in the sink before running upstairs.
“Are you okay Danno?” Grace asked, sitting down beside her father while she waited.
“Yeah Baby, of course I am, why do you ask?” Danny lied, fingers combing through Grace’s hair.
“You seem more sad, I thought being here with Uncle Steve would have made you happier, You were smiling a lot more before, but something’s changed again…” She observed.
“You’re right Gracie, being here with Uncle Steve does make me happier, but you know this isn’t permanent right? We’ll be moving back home the day after tomorrow…” he explained.
“Is that why you’re sad? Because we have to leave again? Did Uncle Steve not want us to stay here?” Grace asked innocently.
“No Baby, of course Steve loves having us here… I guess maybe you’re right, maybe I’m a bit sad because we have to leave here soon, but we have to,” Danny reassured.
“But why? I really like it here, why can’t we just stay? Especially if he makes you happy Danno!” Grace pouted.
“Grace, I would love to have you guys here all the time, but you know I'm not always going to be around, don’t you?” Steve spoke up, walking into the room and surprising both Danny and Grace.
“Why not?”
“You know what my job is right? I’m part of the Navy, and that means that I have to go away a lot and sometimes for a very long time,” Steve tried to explained.
“But I don’t want you to go,” Grace said tearfully.
“Don’t worry about that for now Sweetie, let’s just have fun today,” Steve dismissed, pulling the little girl up and into his arms and holding her close. “You know Sweetie, I used to not have anything to worry about when I was called away on mission, I didn’t really have anything to come home to either. But that’s all changed since meeting you and Danno, and I promise you, when the time comes, I’m going to do everything I can to come back home to you,” Steve promised.
“I want that too, Uncle Steve,” Grace whispered, hiding her face under Steve’s chin.
Danny met Steve’s gaze, the open vulnerability in Steve’s eyes was something he had never seen before in the military hardened man. It was shocking, seeing the open honesty in Steve and realising just how much Steve was willing to invest in their relationship, and yet he still didn’t think he was ready to leap into the relationship deep down he knew he wanted.
“Alright now, come on, let’s go, Danno needs to get ready for work and Captain is desperate for a good run I think!” Steve said, trying to lighten the mood.
Grace jumped down and quickly hugged her father goodbye before rushing out the door with Captain in tow. Steve and Danny stared at each other for a quiet moment, then, with a quick nod, Steve followed after Grace.
The park was relatively empty so early in the morning, Steve and Grace enjoying the time alone at the park, playing games with each other and Captain. They chased each other around, Steve running after Grace with Captain taking up the end, the normally serious man rushing up behind Grace and lifting her high up in the air. Grace would cheer and squeal in delight, laughing when Steve threw her high up in the air, catching her with ease.
After a while, Steve collapsed down onto the ground, while Grace continued to play with Captain. Steve looked up at the sky and wished that this could be his life, never before had he enjoyed himself as much as he had these last few months with Danny and Grace, and he didn’t want anything to change now that he had experienced it. A few minutes later, Grace joined him on the blanket, still tossing the ball for Captain to fetch.
“Uncle Steve, can I ask you something?” She asked after a few moments.
“Anything Baby,” Steve nodded, rolling over onto his side to meet Grace’s gaze.
“Do you love Danno? And I mean really…” She asked, shocking Steve, this was definitely not what he was expecting.
“Well…”
“It’s just that… I’m pretty sure he loves you, he’s really happy when you're around, and when he’s had a hard day I know that the only two things that make him feel better are me and you… but I don’t want him to get upset if you don’t love him too… I know he got hurt by my mummy, that’s why we don’t see her anymore…” she quickly interrupted, saying everything in one breath.
Steve sat up and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. “You really are too smart for your own good, you know that? Yeah Grace, I think I do love your Danno, but he’s scared of getting hurt again, and I don’t blame him for that, no one wants to get hurt,” Steve explained.
“But you wouldn’t hurt him…”
“Not on purpose, but if something happened while I was away or -”
“Then just don’t go away?”
Steve sighed, “if only it were that simple sweetie,” he mumbled, wishing like hell it were. “Anyway, you don’t have to be worrying about all of this, you let your daddy and me work things out,” he added, gently nudging her to keep playing.
“Well, if it means anything, I wouldn’t mind if you and Danno loved each other,” she shrugged before running off to keep playing, leaving Steve alone on the blanket.
Steve mulled over everything Grace had said, lying back down and trying to work out what he could do to make things work. He quickly sat up however upon hearing Captain’s insistent barking, the dog rarely ever barking unless something was wrong. He expertly scanned the park, searching out any signs of danger when his eyes landed on Grace, the little girl chasing after Captain’s ball that had rolled onto the road, totally unaware of the car heading her way.
He barely had to think twice, quickly leaping up and rushing towards Grace. Distantly, Steve heard someone else crying out, but he didn’t focus on it, his only goal to get to Grace and get her out of harm’s way. He barrelled through the parked cars and scooped Grace up into his arms, using his momentum to push him to the other side of the road where he fell on his back, Grace carefully nestled in his arms. Steve looked up, breathing heavily, just as the car rushed past, horn blazing, right over the ball Grace was trying to get before closing his eyes and trying to catch his breath.
“Grace! Gracie! Steve! Oh God!” Danny came rushing up to the pair, just as Captain did, and immediately took Grace into his arms while Captain licked Steve’s face.
“I’m sorry Danno!” Grace cried, large tears rolling down her cheeks.
“Shh Baby, it’s okay, you're safe, that’s all that matters, it’s okay,” Danny whispered over and over again.
Steve sighed while sitting up, wrapping his arm around Captain’s neck and roughing up his fur, “Good boy, Cap.,” he praised, watching Danny hold his daughter.
“Come on, let’s go home,” Danny said, looking towards Steve’s raised eyebrow, realising he had just called Steve's place home, “I mean, if that’s alright with you Steve?” He added quietly, hands still rubbing Gracie’s back in comfort.
“Yeah, come on, I’ll drive,” Steve nodded, helping Danny up. He quickly gathered all their belongings before getting into Danny’s Camaro, making a note to come pick his truck up at a later point.
Once home, Danny helped Grace change into some more comfortable clothing and settled her on the couch wrapped in an old blanket and with a Disney movie on while Steve started preparing a quick lunch.
“Are you okay?” Steve asked feeling Danny’s presence in the room.
“I… I don’t know… You saved her, thank you… I just… I don’t know what I would have done if something had happened to her!” Danny sighed, moving around to sit at the counter.
Steve stopped what he was doing and moved towards Danny, wrapping his arms around the shorter man’s shoulder and holding him close. “You don’t have to thank me for saving her, never doubt that I wouldn’t do everything in my power to keep her safe, I'm just sorry I stopped watching her, even if it was only for a few moments, I swear!” Steve admitted.
“I don’t blame you Steve, and I don’t doubt that you will always try to keep her safe when you're here, but what about when you're not here? What do I do then? How are you going to keep her safe then? How do I not hurt when you're not around?” Danny questioned.
Steve sighed, pressing his lips to Danny’s hair, well past caring about the ramifications. “I can’t promise much, but just know that I do what I do just to keep you guys safe. It’s like what you always tell Grace, you became a cop to keep where she lives safe, I do the same thing, just not so locally… I’ve grown to love her so much, I think I love you both so much, I’d do whatever it takes to keep you guys safe, never forget that,” Steve spoke gently.
Danny looped his arms around Steve’s waist, his legs bracketing either side of him, and held him close. “I-I know… And I do think I love you too,” Danny sighed, looking up at Steve.
They slowly drew nearer to each other until their lips met, it was only a gentle press of a kiss, but it was enough. It was a promise for so much more.
-End.
