Summary: Lieutenant Commander Steven McGarrett, a Navy SEAL on a mission far away, and Detective Danny Williams, single father living in Hawaii, never realised how much their lives could change by a chance encounter with a dog. Two completely seperate lives, brought together by one dog.
Previous Chapter. The flight home was a long one, the entire team ready and desperate to return home and to their loved ones, regardless of how long or short it might be. Steve had thought about his dog every single day since sending Captain to safety, he never once forgot about his best friend, hoping every day that he had made it safe and found a good family.
“Looking forward to some time off Sir?” LeBlanc asked, snapping Steve out of his thoughts.
“It’s something we all need right now,” Steve nodded, avoiding the question.
“Where are you staying?” Trevor asked instead, looking out the plane’s window and admiring the view of Hawaii as they made their decent.
“I have a place… this is where I grew up,” Steve evaded once more, liking to keep his personal life private.
“Right, roger that Sir,” Trevor nodded, completely understanding, turning back to the window and leaving Steve back to his thoughts.
The plane touched down barely an hour later without incident, a large throng of people waving and cheering, greeting them as they disembarked. The men lined up in formation in front of Steve, backs towards their family as they waited for their lieutenant commander’s permission to go find their families.
“Company! Fall out!” Steve yelled as he saluted his troop for the final time in what he hoped was a while, sending them all off to go find their families which no one wasted any time in doing.
Steve didn’t have anyone waiting on him, instead he just grabbed his duffle bag and pack and walked off to find a cab. He hadn’t been back to Hawaii in over three years, the island however looking no different to when he was last there. It took no longer than 15 minutes to get home, searching all his pockets and pouches for his keys before finally unlocking his house. Steve dumped the bags by the door, walking straight through and opening up the back doors that lead onto his private beach.
This was home, the sand and the surf, the sun and the fresh air, this is what he had missed most about being away for all those years. He took his time after that, stripping off the outer layers of his uniform before walking around his house and opening up all the windows, airing the dark place. There was so much more he needed to do to make the place more liveable, but at this point all he wanted to do was get back into the ocean and then maybe get some food.
Danny was enjoying the early morning with his daughter and Captain. He initially complained when he had to transfer to Hawaii, but secretly, Danny loved the endless sunshine, it gave him plenty of time outdoors to spend with his daughter, doing things both of them loved. Today was no different, Danny and Grace had woken early and gotten ready, deciding on spending the day at the nearby park with Captain.
“Watch out Gracie! Don’t go too close to the water!” Danny yelled, watching on from the picnic table as Grace threw a ball for Captain to fetch.
“I promise Danno! Only my toes! Right?” Grace called back, jokingly.
“Exactly!” he laughed back, looking up and seeing the large army aircraft coming in, a common view in the Hawaiian skies.
The rest of the morning carried on in a similar way, Danny mostly hanging back and watching his daughter play with Captain, only occasionally getting pulled in to their games. At around lunch time, they all collapsed back at their picnic table, opening up their packed lunch and digging in. Captain sat by Grace’s legs, silently waiting for any food that may accidentally drop down for him.
“Cap.,” Danny mock warned, watching as the Sheppard mix kept slowly inching closer and closer to his daughter, tossing the dog a piece of bread anyway.
“Danno? Can we get some shave ice next?” Grace asked after a while, slowly chewing on her sandwich.
“Sure Monkey,” Danny shrugged, wiping some sauce off Grace’s face, “Kamekona’s?” he asked.
Grace nodded, swinging her legs back and forth as she offered the last of her lunch to Captain. She jumped up and dusted herself off, “Come on Captain! Let’s play some more!” she declared, rushing back off towards the sand, Captain keeping right by her.
Danny continued to watch the duo, marvelling at how close their bond had become since the first day after bringing Captain home. They had initially designated an area just for Captain to sleep in, however the dog had decided to take residence up in Grace’s room, Danny finding the large dog sleeping at the foot of her bed late at night. From there, Captain practically followed Grace wherever she went, there was no need for leashes or restraints, the dog never straying far from either of them whenever they went out.
“Captain! Wait! Where are you going?!” Grace cried out, breaking Danny’s train of thought.
Danny jumped up, sprinting towards his daughter who was trying to keep up with their runaway dog. “Captain! Captain! Come! Come back!” both of them called out desperately, no idea what had gotten into their dog all of a sudden.
He had finally managed to square everything away, his bags unpacked and everything in the wash, his house airing and the water dripping from his body after his long swim drying. It was all perfect in Steve’s little world, now all he needed was something for lunch as his stomach made perfectly clear by the loud grumbling sounds it was making. It didn’t take long for Steve to decide on where he wanted to go, it was one of his favourite places the last time he was home, Kamekona’s the best place to go for a quick bite.
Steve quickly changed, pulling on his ‘Navy’ t-shirt and running shorts before pocketing his keys and wallet, not needing his cell phone and setting off on a light jog towards the beach. He may have been a natural in the water, but he also loved running. It was the rhythmic sound of his feet hitting the pavement, always allowing his mind to wander, that he loved most about running, unlike the need to continually fight against the force of the ocean while he was swimming.
He wasn’t really aware of his surroundings when it happened, he distantly heard someone calling out, but surely it wasn’t for him he thought, he didn’t really know anyone on the island anymore, so he just kept on running.
“Captain! Stop!” It was an order and he immediately followed it. Steve froze and about-faced, body tensing into attention with his hand beginning to rise in a salute, even though it wasn’t his rank.
The thing came out of nowhere, Steve barely having enough time to brace himself before the brown blur knocked into him. He was dropped to the ground in an instant, fur and slobber covering his face before he knew what had hit him.
“Captain! Get off him!” “Captain! Shit! Sorry man!” both Grace and Danny admonished and apologised.
“Captain?” Steve mumbled, eyes widening as he pulled back from the dog, gripping either side of the dog’s head tight unbelieving. “Cap.! I can’t believe it’s you boy! God! I promised I’d see you again! And here you are! You found me! Shit, it’s been so long!” Steve cried, eyes moistening with emotion as he hugged the dog close.
Steve buried his head into the dog’s neck, not caring who was watching, simply holding his long lost friend close. He was so wrapped up in his reunion however, that he completely failed to notice the two people cautiously approach him.
“Uh… Sorry about our dog… I hope he didn’t hurt you or anything,” the blond man spoke, pulling Steve back into the present.
“Huh? What? No, of course not, it’s… its fine… your dog?” Steve asked, finally looking up at the two people watching him as if he were crazy.
“Yeah, listen, I’m really sorry about all this, he’s never run off before, there’s no need for you to do anything drastic… If you know what I mean?”
“Sh-oot” Steve started, eyes glancing down at the scared little girl before quickly changing what he was about to say. “No, I would never! Its fine! Uh… You probably wouldn’t really believe this but…” Steve tried.
“Captain, come here!” Grace interrupted, calling for her dog to come back, a look of hurt crossing her face when he didn’t move off of Steve’s lap.
“Captain, off,” Steve ordered, “Good boy,” he praised when Captain immediately listened, allowing Steve to stand up and properly introduce himself to the pair. “My name’s Steve, Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett,” Steve said, giving his full title.
Danny’s eyes widened slightly, unbelieving, “Detective Danny Williams, this here is my daughter Grace, and that there is our dog, Captain,” Danny introduced, emphasising the fact that the dog was theirs.
“Danny, do you know exactly where this dog came from?” Steve asked, “Captain was actually my dog, he saved my life and in return I saved his, kept him on base then sent him here where I hoped to find him again…” Steve started.
“You can’t have him!” Grace cried, “He’s mine! I love him!” She continued to sob, launching herself at the dog who was still sitting obediently beside Steve, his gaze never leaving Steve, and holding the dog close.
“Look, I’m sorry, but we adopted him, and we obviously have no proof that he was even yours… come on guys, let’s go home,” Danny said, grabbing Grace with one hand and tugging on Captain’s collar with the other.
“Wait! Shit, wait, I didn’t mean it like that!” Steve urged, running around the group in an attempt to stop them from leaving.
Steve pulled out his wallet and tugged at the old and slightly damaged photo that had been stuffed in there, lines etched deep into the photograph from being repeatedly folded and unfolded. “Here, see, this is me and captain on base overseas… obviously I can’t say where… but I know he’s mine, he even has the collar I made from him, it have the Navy SEALs insignia on it, right? I put that on him, I made that for him!” Steve explained desperately, hands subconsciously moving to indicate the Navy t-shirt he was wearing.
“That’s all well and good and what not, but that still doesn’t mean you can take our dog away from us…” Danny commented, not really sure how true that was, if the military man really wanted his dog back, Danny was sure he could manage it, he probably knew the Governor and everything.
“Look, in all honesty, while I would love to have Cap. back in my life, I know that its just not possible, I'm rarely ever home and I wouldn’t be able to care for him… not like how I'm sure you guys are… I just… I was hoping to be able to spend some time with him is all…” Steve pleaded.
“Oh… well… I’m not really sure…” Danny contemplated.
“Danno! I think we have too! You always say that we have to give people a chance… and look at Captain! He wants to be with Mr McGarrett!” Grace interrupted again, pointing at Captain who was still straining to get to Steve.
“Thank… Thank you Grace,” Steve said awkwardly, not really used to dealing with children. “What do you say Danno? I can’t be that bad right? I promise I'm not some psycho! I can even tell you a few stories about this guy if you’d like!” Steve added, turning up the charm, desperate to get some time with his dog again.
“Fine… fine! I’m getting blindsided by all the puppy dog eyes here! Three pairs of them! So unfair!” Danny ranted, finally letting go of Captain’s collar, the dog immediately rushing back to Steve.
“Thank you…”
“We were going to head out for some shave ice, I don’t suppose you want any?” Danny asked, the underlying meaning of his offer clear, there was no way they were going anywhere else but a very public area for this meeting, Danny still not entirely trusting Steve, especially with his daughter.
“Sure, sounds great! I only just landed this morning, and I’m starving!” Steve quickly accepted, giving a slight nod to the father, showing the other man that he completely understood what the circumstances of the visit entailed.
“Awesome!” Grace cheered, leading the group forward.
Steve followed on silently, completely intrigued and taken by the father and daughter. Aside from his superiors in the Navy, never had someone spoken to Steve in such a way, and he had to admit to himself, he sort of liked it. He wanted to get to know the small family better, wanted to find out more about Danny and Grace.
“Well, you coming Army boy?” Danny called out.
“Navy! I was in the Navy, Danny!” Steve called back with a chuckle, racing up to Danny’s side, looking the other man in the eye before both of them quickly turned away.
Maybe the thing he was feeling wasn’t just one-sided.
