10 “Chris man, maybe you should go home? Get some sleep and go shower?” Jensen suggested the following day.
“I can’t just leave Jared here, I have to stay,” Chris rebutted, refusing to leave Jared’s side.
After naming Caitlyn Chris had tried to argue with Jared over the surname, but Jared had refused to say any more. He kept staring silently at the little girl, content with having said what he had and not needing anymore. After a while Chris gave up on the idea of trying to convince Jared to name her otherwise and just sat beside his lover and next to his daughter. His daughter. Jared had wanted to give her his surname to make sure everyone knew it was Chris’.
They still weren’t legally allowed to marry in America and the government had yet to allow two ‘fathers’ names on the birth certificate, so while everyone would know that Jared had carried the baby in the legal sense, everyone would now also know that it was together, both Jared and Chris, that had brought the baby into the world. Chris hadn’t known what to say once he figured it out, he simply grabbed Jared’s hand and looked up at the ceiling, thank you Lord Chris thought to himself.
They stayed for a while longer until Chris started to notice Jared’s head sagging. Jared was obviously exhausted, and while they both wanted to stay with their daughter constantly, Jared was still recovering from a serious surgery and needed his rest. He lifted the breaks on the wheelchair and with a final goodbye to his daughter he left the room, pushing Jared along in front of him.
“Chris, if you don’t start looking after yourself you’ll just get sick and you won’t be any good to Jared or your baby that way,’ Steve argued, breaking Chris out of his memories.
“Caitlyn...” Chris mumbled.
“What?”
“Our baby...” Chris said looking up at his two best friends, “Her name is Caitlyn. Caitlyn Hope,” Chris said, a soft smile gracing his face.
“Did you just decide that now?” Jensen asked, concerned that Chris had made up his mind without Jared.
“No, Jared and I... we named her, he came around for a bit. Not much, but I think your idea helped. He said he wanted to name her, and we did. Together,” Chris explained, a wide smile now in place of the small hesitant one.
“Really? That’s great man! Congratulations!” Steve said, truly happy for his friend.
“Caitlyn Hope Padalecki... has a nice ring to it!” Jensen smiled.
“Nah,” Chris chuckled shaking his head, “Caitlyn Hope Kane, Jared insisted on it,” he clarified.
“Wow, Chris, that’s great!” Jensen said, everyone immediately understanding what Jared’s insistence meant. Even though they couldn’t be legally married, having a child that had Chris’ name while having been carried by Jared definitely meant that Jared was in it for life, for the life of his daughter.
“But that still doesn’t mean that you can stay here and waste away into nothing but mould and sweaty socks,” Steve said getting back on track.
“True, Steve and I will watch over Jared, he’s sleeping now and will be for a while anyway, go home, shower, eat and sleep for a few hours, if anything does happen we will call you okay?” Jensen insisted.
“I can’t...” Chris tried.
“You can and you will, now get!” Steve laughed, pulling Chris up and off the seat and into a quick embrace.
“Okay, just give me a minute,” Chris laughed returning to Jared’s side. He pulled the younger man’s hand into his and placed a quick kiss over the knuckles. “I’m being sent home for a few hours Jay, but I won’t be long okay?” he started, hoping for a response. “Okay, here, I’ll leave you with this...” Chris sighed, reaching over for the paper bag and grabbing the remaining toy.
“I love you, my lion,” he sighed, leaving the toy nestled in Jared’s hand. Chris turned away quickly, not seeing the way Jared instinctively brought the toy closer to him, his fingers tracing invisible patterns into the fabric even in his sleep.
Jensen grabbed at Chris once the older man was done, pulling him into a bone crushing hug before pushing him towards the door, “we’ll see in several hours, and that’s a minimum, you need your rest,” Jensen said in farewell.
Jensen and Steve sat on either side of Jared’s lax form, Jensen holding one of Jared’s large hands in his own, Steve carding his fingers through Jared’s hair, as they talked softly between them. In a few days all of their friends would be coming to visit Jared so they took this quiet moment of peace seriously, reconnecting with their close friend who they nearly lost.
It took Chris a while to remember where he had parked his truck, but he eventually found it and was on his way home not long after. He parked his truck besides Jared’s car in the garage and walked into their shared house. He tossed his keys, wallet and sunglasses onto the desk and carried on towards the bedroom. The house felt empty without Jared or the dogs at home, but the dogs were being looked after by the sitter and it was probably best that they stayed there until Jared was completely healed and back at home.
He didn’t bother to turn on any lights as he moved around, he just entered his bedroom and closed the door behind him, tossing his cell onto the bedside table just in case. He stripped his shirt and long sleeved top, then shucked off his jeans and tossed the bunch into the hamper waiting to be cleaned. In the bathroom he didn’t pause at the mirror and think about how bad he looked, no he walked straight over to the shower and turned up the heat before removing his boxers.
Standing under the scalding spray Chris thought about the past week, how everything had been going so well until Jared started feeling the labour pains. They had all played the blame game already, Jared first, then Chris on his own, wondering if he could have done something different. But none of that mattered now, now they just had to regroup and pull it together to fight for their little girl.
He washed up quickly then shut off the water without wasting much time. He towel dried his body, leaving his hair to dry by itself before throwing on some sweatpants and one of Jared’s larger hoodies. He pulled the thick material and pulled the hood over his head, ignoring the feel of his wet hair dripping down his neck, and breathed in deeply, loving the feel of Jared all around him. The sleeves were too long and the top hung off him, but he didn’t really care. He walked into the kitchen in search of food but gave up in finding anything that wasn’t old and mouldy.
He returned to the bedroom and sat on the large king-sized bed, his head cradled in his hands. He forced himself not to let the tears fall, knowing that if he crumbled now, getting himself back together would be that much harder still. His cell phone ringing jerked him out of his mind, he picked it up and without looking at the screen answered the phone.
“Hello?” he asked.
“Chris?” a tiny hesitant voice sounded through the phone lines.
“Yeah, who is this?” he asked.
“Megan, uh, Jared’s sister. I... I was just calling to let you know that I booked a ticket to come and visit you and Jared,” she said sounding slightly more confident.
“Jared’s parents are coming?” Chris asked, if they were it could either be good for Jared if they were willing to reaccept him or bad for both of them.
“N-no. Just me, Jeff can’t and my parent’s refuse to even talk about it. I booked the flight by myself for tomorrow but I... I don’t have anywhere to stay. I was kind of hoping you would take me in?” she asked carefully.
“Sure Megan, you can stay at ours, I’ll be at the hospital with Jared most of the time, but when you’re not with us I’m sure I can get someone to stay home with you...” Chris suggested.
“You don’t have to, I’ll be fine on my own...”
“No, Jared wouldn’t want you home alone, and I wouldn’t want my sister home alone either. A lot of our friends will be around soon anyway, I’m sure one of them will end up staying with us too, it’s okay. Just let me know when your flight is due to come in and I’ll have Jensen or Steve pick you up from the airport,” Chris said.
“Are you sure?” she asked again.
“Definitely, no question about it. How long are you staying for?” Chris asked.
“I haven’t... I haven’t actually booked the flight back yet. I mean, when you want me gone I’ll go, but I figure I could be of some help to you guys and...” Megan started.
“What’s going on Honey?” Chris asked cutting to the chase.
“My parents said if I went to see you guys that I’d be choosing you over them, not in so many words but it was understood... they haven’t kicked me out or anything but I don’t think there will be a warm welcome for me when I come back...” she said, her voice wavering.
“What about school and everything?” Chris asked.
“I just graduated from college, I don’t have a job or anything yet though...”
“It’s okay Meg, you come to us and we will look after you, we can just go from there okay? You doing alright?” he asked.
“Y-yeah, thanks. I’ll be good when I get to talk to my brother and see you guys,” she said, sniffling a bit still.
“Good, okay. Look I hate to tell you this now, and I know Jensen told you that Jared woke up from his coma, but he hasn’t really been talking all that much okay? So don’t come here expecting the brother you remember right away,” Chris warned.
“Is he okay though? What’s wrong with him?” she asked.
“Nothing physically, I’ll explain it better when you get here,” Chris said reassuringly.
“Thank you so much Chris, I don’t know how to repay you...” she started.
“Don’t worry, you’re family,” he said simply.
They shared a few more words before Chris hung up. He looked at the clock and realised that he had already been home for just under two hours now, a few more hours for some proper rest and he would be back with Jared. He set his alarm for four hours later and curled up above the covers on Jared’s side of the bed, he was asleep within minutes.
His dreams were erratic and confusing, upon waking up he had no memory of any of his dreams, just the left over feelings. He was scared and worried, the dreams just didn’t sit well with him. He picked up his phone and looked at the time, there were still another few minutes before his alarm was due to ring, but something was nagging at him. He wanted to call the guys and make sure everyone was okay, but he knew with them being in the hospital, in Jared’s room, that they wouldn’t be answering.
He stood up and raked a hand through his hair, he changed his sweat pants to jeans and left Jared’s hoodie on before walking out the door. He drove as quickly as he could to the hospital, making sure to stick as close to the speed limit as possible. He quickly found a parking spot and walked the all too familiar hallways to Jared’s room. Standing outside the door everything seemed normal, maybe he had just been overreacting, he regained his breath before pushing the door open.
Everyone seemed normal, Jensen was holding Jared’s hand while Steve was playing his guitar softly, the chords to ‘Spot in the Corner’ the only sound that could be heard in the room above the heart monitor and the world outside. Chris looked at Jared, immediately stopping in his place when he noticed the tear tracks streaking down Jared’s face.
“What happened? Why didn’t you guys call me?” Chris asked, rushing up to Jared’s side after a moment’s hesitation.
“He hasn’t been doing that for too long, we were going to call but we thought we could try to handle it first, let you get some more rest,” Jensen said softly, “How come you’re back already?” he asked.
“I don’t know, it just felt like something was wrong?” Chris said uncertainly.
“Talk to him,” Steve said simply, still playing the guitar.
“Jared?” Chris started, leaning over Jared’s form, noticing that the toy he had given to Jared was now resting in the crook of Jared’s neck. “I’m here Jay, what’s wrong?” he asked. He didn’t get an answer from the younger man, instead Jared turned his head to face Chris, his wet eyes sparkling as they met Chris’ eyes.
“I’m here Jay, I’m here and I ain’t going anywhere,” he whispered, pushing some hair off Jared’s face and placing a tender kiss to his forehead.
Steve paused strumming for a moment, Chris meeting his eyes and nodding before he started playing again. He played the opening chords twice before Chris was ready, he coughed once before finally finding his voice;
“I see
a spot in the corner that is right for me
to sit you down and make you see
all the things you've done
I'll tell you
you're the only thing in my life that's true
I know you love me too
and our lives are one
You're the only thing I'm sure of
when the night falls into day
the silly little things I do
the honest words I say
I'll take you
back to my palace and I'll marry you
be my queen and I'll carry you
and give you all I own
I know
I ain’t got much too show
you've seen my all time low
and then you got me high...”
“Ch-Chris?” a hesitant voice broke through over Chris’ soft words, “I-I love you...” Jared cried. His eyes shining for the first time in nearly a week with life.
“My lion...” Chris whispered in response, stroking the head of the toy lion in Jared’s hands as he bent down to kiss Jared’s lips, wetting the chapped lips with his tongue before deepening the kiss, not giving any mind to the other men in the room. “...You’re back...” he sighed.
