On Canadian Speech Patterns.

Interestingly enough, though I currently live very close to the Canadian border, I'm constantly amazed at the fact that I can't really gauge people as being Canadian until they say certain words ( Read more... )

That's interesting, because I was taught to say it with "pro" like "professional".

Well, upon reflection, I guess that most people in Commonwealth countries do. It's rare that I meet an American who does, though... but most other Commonwealth countries (besides Canada) give me other verbal cues. People from Australia and New Zealand are easy for me to pin down, people from British-English speaking nations are likewise, but Canadians usually speak something very close to American English.

But I can tell people from Singapore fairly easily. :) You guys are pretty easy to pick out. Just special like that.

Well, 'project' is not usually what gives it away that people are Australian. You guys give me plenty of warning from the instant I meet you. I don't have to wonder, most of the time. That's a good thing. :)

This pronunciation must be a Commonwealth thing, then. Canadians can usually be found simply by listening to their vowels, because the rest of their accents are so mild compared to our own that their general speech patterns don't give it away.
