[Fanfic] #009 Drabbles - Keys in between

Chopin, Mozart, Liszt and Schubert; serious pieces are played one after another. The focused isn’t on focus; he shuts his eyes and sees darkness, even rays of the sunlight are unable to pierce through his lids. A tear streams - at its own pace, undisturbed.

“Donghae you talk about nothing but (classical) music, you sure are boring - just kidding.”

Was what you used to tease me about.

“Donghae, we should go to the beach for once. The air will be great.”

“It’ll be cold, at this season.”

“It will be alright!”

Was what you used to pester me with your gummy smile.

“Donghae, are you seriously going out with me, or you’re going out with the piano?”

“Hyukjae…” I lost concentration in continuing the smooth piece.

“Just kidding.”

You swept off with a smile again, pushing up my spectacles and ruffled my hair as if the seriousness was initially zero.

“Donghae, if I die, will you play a piece for me.” I stared into your eyes - seemingly and evidently having the presence of tears. “Look, something like, Hyukjae in D major or C-sharp. Cool, isn’t it?” You introduced that smile once again. That smile that I do not want to face. Escapism, you’d say.

“Don’t joke about something like this.” I managed a smile - no, it did not look like a smile - maybe an expression, a weird one.

“Right, my bad.” You walked towards me and pressed on the keyboard.

Once.

Twice.

Thrice.

“It will be great, if we’re like this keyboard.”

“Eh?”

“This piano will be useless, if one of the keys - black or white - disappears.” I allowed silence and stared at the keyboard. “Are we like this piano? Can’t survive without each other.” You pressed another four keys continuously. “Or there are pieces that don’t need the black keys.”

Was what you said to me, before you left.

The last Chopin was finished flawlessly. The focused exposes his eyes to the light. He looks out of the window and faces the vast, blue sky.

“Hyukkie, what do the black keys… really mean to the piano?”

He inhales, and plays another piece, a piece that he did not promise to play for.
