11pm bedtime
Woke to say goodbye to jenna before she left for work, then put my happy ass back to bed for another half hour or so. rett and i lay around the apt until about 10, then i put myself together and got out on the road around 10:30 - let's be honest. no reason trying to leave between 8am and 10am. traffic will just be stupid.
the drive north was nice and easy. altho i do find myself wondering why men seem to think picking up ladies on the highway is acceptable. every day i've driven i've had at LEAST one man try to grab my attention while we're speeding down a highway.
interesting human dynamics...
ANYWAY, it was about 2 in teh afternoon, when i was on the phone with matt - talking about how our landlord is already proving to be a deadbeat - that i realized i didn't know if i had brought my passport. danny later confirmed that i had, in fact, taken my passport out of my bag, cooed at it (i love my passport!) and then put it in the drawer it is normally in. why i did this, i'm not sure (i expect alcohol played a part).
so, matt grabbed it and hopped over to fedex so it could get to my father's house, while i kept driving up to the canadian border - Hey! I was ONLY an hour away - to see if i could get across without it.
turns out i can!
i did have to stop at immigration, and tell them many tales of WHY i didn't have my passport, and where i was going, and who i was visiting, and where we met, adn why i had been in china, and how long i would be there, adn when and where i would leave from.
now many people are warning the states won't let me back in. we shall see, shan't we?
but, after about an extra hour and a half in traffic, and kind of guessing how to get there because google maps crapped out after i crossed the border, and i loss my at&t coverage, and then calling chantal despite the fees, because, really, i just needed to be there, i made it to Atwater!
we spent the night sitting in chantal's apartment with her hubby ray and her youngest sister natasha, drinking sangria, eating pizza, and playing loaded questions. really, i don't think i could ask for much more.
these are such wonderful people to talk with. i think they have the added benefit of my phone not working up here - i turn it on about 3 times a day, just in case there is an emergency text or phone call, but there's still no data or email service. i hadn't realized how much i'd been cheating myself while visiting jenna and rett by being on the phone. i LOVED the text conversations i was having with people back home, and some of it (the vegas and Cali plannign parts) were kind of important, but it has been so wonderful to be just completely engaged with chantal these past 24 hours.
but, that's a post for day 5 :)
