The detention center called about a potential client who’d been accused of arson, effectively killing her parents and older brother with the obvious intent of gaining an inheritance. Curious, I went and spoke with her in person, and when I asked her, point blank, if she’d done it, she became fidgety. When I asked her if she knew who did do it, the Magatama reacted and three locks appeared.
It was then I realized: even if she wasn’t guilty of arson, she was most certainly guilty of something.
I turned her down.
It leads me to wonder what the point in being a defense attorney is when you’re constantly defending those who are at fault. Perhaps not culpable for the crime of which they’re accused, but there’s always something to be held responsible for, isn’t there? We all deserve to be punished for one crime or another.
