There were a number of things Alex noticed in those first few moments. His time spent in solitary had made him fascinated with studying human--or in this case, mutant--behavior now that he was around people again, and he picked up on subtle things that most people might not have.

Like the way Erik looked at Raven, though this was anything but subtle, since the older man didn't seem afraid to show it. It let Alex off easy on explaining to Raven why he wouldn't be sticking around at least, because she would be distracted by the metal manipulator's attention on her. Hopefully. She didn't seem so put off by the idea of him leaving soon anyway. He smiled and nodded towards Raven.

Alex noticed then that Hank, of all people, had obviously been working out lately--and was unafraid to show his disgusting feet hand things, whatever they were called. Alex wasn't sure what bothered him more, the fact that he had to look at Hank's feet or the fact that the other mutant was starting to become competition in the physical department. As long as he kept his shoes on.

And Amara. God, she'd just saved his life--and everyone else--hours before by putting her own at risk. He could see the faint red of burns on her hands, and the guilt that washed over him destroyed any smile her presence normally would have brought out. So he pretended he hadn't heard her question, glanced at her briefly, and then focused on Hank and Kurt instead--because somehow he figured the blue mutant would get his humor. "Nice outfit," he commented sarcastically, "does it come with actual swimming trunks too, or do you prefer to run around in your panties?"

But it was Ben's arrival that caught his attention more than anything. Here he finally did smile, making his way over to the younger mutant to clap his shoulders somewhat roughly in an attempt of showing manly brotherhood. "Ben!" Alex commented, smiling. "You made it!" Besides the younger mutants never-ending amusing presence, Alex was just glad there was someone else there with a power that might also keep them from swimming. It meant he wasn't the only one limited in his interactions in a part that was centered around a body of water.

Maybe he'd stay for a while after all.

She wasn't horribly offended by Alex ignoring her, given the situation earlier, but when he'd made the comment about swimming in panties, she thought he was speaking to her, since he hadn't moved to make the comment. She sighed, taking a deep breath, refusing to feel offended, refusing to show anything. She thought about talking to Ben, but Alex quickly turned his attention onto him so that was out. There wasn't really anyone else she was interested in talking to then, so perhaps it would just be better to go back into the mansion. She could float in the large tub she'd found in one of the larger bathrooms if she felt like being submerged in water.

The sudden rough-and-tumble greeting caught Ben by surprise and he twisted, craning his head back to pin a face to the jostling. That it was Alex, all bright eyes and broad grin, that he found staring back should have been his first guess. They seemed to be orbiting a lot of the same space these days and theirs had been a bond quick to forge, tempered by mutual losses and a private need for fraternity that was mirrored in one another.

An answering grin leapt onto the boy's face and he pushed to stand, bracing himself on Alex's shoulder when he somehow managed to slip a bit on the bone-dry grass.

"Alex, hi!" Ben hoped he sounded a lot less eager than he felt. It was hard not to make a complete fool of himself when he so admired the older boy. He felt ridiculously fortunate to have somehow managed to wedge himself a spot in Havok's attention, in spite of his propensity for awkward interaction, and though he didn't have any actual brothers of his own he was discovering that the surrogate experience was pretty much the most fantastic thing ever.

"Boy, m'I glad that you're here," Ben gave him a once over and his expression grew impossibly brighter. "And not swimming! Alright!"

The boy lifted a hand for a high-five in the name of solidarity.
