Paint It Black: An Akito Sohma Fanmix

Tracks by...
Emilie Autumn, Portishead, Kidneythieves, Garbage, Amanda Palmer, Dresden Dolls, Curve, The Tea Party, Tom McRae, Cat Power, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Poe, and Free Dominguez

Spoilers up to end of series, more specifically, chapter 97. MORE SPOILERS THAN YOU CAN SHAKE A LEEK AT?? One image down the page might be considered NSFW now that I think about it. It's pretty mild, but just in case. It's from ch 97, so you can guess.

(Track listing at bottom of post.)

I wish I had more time to write out why Akito is such an interesting and multilayered character. I enjoyed that she was flawed and not an outright villain. I dug how twisted she became by the pressure of being God, by clinging to false ties that hurt everyone around her. I dug that she grew up and didn't remain static. I like that atonement doesn't come easy, but it does come with sincere effort. I like that her actions had consequences and she wasn't just standing around twirling her mustache. I love her screwed up relationship with Shigure and Kureno, and how everything in this series was affected by this love. In all, I just kinda like the char. So here it is, a long-overdue mix I've been working on for ages.

SENDSPACE

1. "Arsenal" by Kidneythieves

naive little pieces of
what they tried to teach her
quiet and protected
slightly anorexic

(She Waits)
she's a time bomb, with her vibe on
she's gonna use it and surprise them
she's a time bomb, with her vibe on
they'll never know where she got her weapon.

2. "Chinese Burn" by Curve

She'll break a promise as a matter of course
Because she thinks it's fun to have no remorse
She gets what she wants and then walks away
And she doesn't give a fuck what you might say

Because it cuts her up like Irish mortar
Mother's pride is what we taught her
Soiled and petty as we happily taunt her
Friend or enemy we're all to blame

If she sits still like she knows she could
She could win this game and be the queen for good
Save herself up for the cream of the crop
Then she'll look us up when she's ready to stop

Because the rage it burns like Chinese torture
She's just someone's favorite daughter
Spoiled and ugly as she willingly slaughters
Friends and enemies, they're all the same
To burn her name
Crush her flame
We're all to blame

3. "Opheliac" by Emilie Autumn

I couldn't be your friend
My world was too unstable
You might have seen the end
But you were never able
To keep me breathing
As the water rises up again
Before I slip away

You know the games I play
And the words I say
When I want my own way
You know the lies I tell
When you've gone through hell
And I say I can't stay
You know how hard it can be
To keep believing in me
When everything and everyone
Becomes my enemy and when
There's nothing more you can do
I'm gonna blame it on you
It's not the way I want to be
I only hope that in the end you will see
It's the Opheliac in me

4. "Paint It Black" by The Tea Party

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens every day

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and I must have it painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black

5. "Milk" by Garbage

I am lost
So I am cruel
But I'd be love and sweetness
If I had you

I'm waiting
I'm waiting for you
I'm waiting
I'm waiting for you

I am weak
But I am strong
I can use my tears to
Bring you home

6. "Half Jack" by The Dresden Dolls

two halves are equal
a cross between two evils
it's not an enviable lot
but if you listen
you'll learn to hear the difference
between the halfs and the half nots

and when I let him in I feel my stitches getting sicker
I try to wash him out but like she said, the blood is thicker
I see my mother in my face
but only when I travel
I run as fast as I can run
but Jack comes tumbling after....

and when I'm brave enough and find a clever way to kick him out
and I'm so high not even you and all your love could bring me down
on 83rd he never found the magic words to change this fact:
I'm half Jill
and half Jack

7. "Forgotten Sanity" by Curve

I've forgotten how to walk
& I can't use my hands at all
I'd cross my heart & hope to die
But I'm heading for a fall

Just let me go for my sanity
Put me out of my misery
I'd get on my knees but I'm not allowed
even though I've forgotten how
I've forgotten how

Decay, decay, decay, decay

Your love is a distant memory
along with most of my family
I'd get on my knees but I'm not allowed
even though I've forgotten how
I've forgotten how

Put me out of my misery
Let me go for my sanity

8. "Karaoke Soul" by Tom McRae

Pull me close, look into my eyes
Smile at me when you stick in the knife
We're bleeding into a cup when we've got enough
We'll just paint the walls
And we don't care how much it hurts
You think you're cursed, it's what you deserve

'cause you're talking rock and roll
Walking karaoke soul
I can see you desperate to please
Let me treat you for your disease

Between angels and ropes, babe, what would you chose?
As you kick the dust from your perfect shoes
Your wolf suit is wearing thin and your real skin looks like it never bleeds
And you're playing to the crowd as the ship goes down comforting me

9. "Happy House" by Siouxsie & The Banshees

We've come to scream in the happy house
We're in a dream in the happy house
We're all quite sane

This is the happy house, we're happy here.
There's room for you if you say "I do"
but don't say "no" or you'll have to go
we've done no wrong with our blinkers on
It's safe and calm if you sing along

This is the happy house, we're happy here in the happy house.
To forget ourselves and pretend all's well
There is no hell.

10. "Metal Heart" by Cat Power

Losing the star without a sky
Losing the reasons why
You're losing the calling that you've been faking
And I'm not kidding

It's damned if you don't and it's damned if you do
Be true 'cause they'll lock you up in a sad sad zoo
Oh hidy hidy hidy what cha tryin to prove
By hidy hidy hiding you're not worth a thing

Sew your fortunes on a string
And hold them up to light
Blue smoke will take
A very violent flight
And you will be changed

11. "Runs In The Family" - Amanda Palmer

If wellness is this what in hells name is sickness?
But business is business and business runs in the family.

We tend to bruise easily.
Mad in the blood.
I'm telling you 'cause I want you to know me - know me & my family.
We're wonderful folks, but don't get to close to me 'cause you might knock me up

Mary have mercy now look what I've done but don't blame me because I can't help where I come from.
Running is something that we've always done well & mostly I can't even tell what I'm running from.
Run from their pity, from responsibility.
Run from the country & run from the city.
I can run from the law, I can run from myself.
I can run from my life, I can run into debt.
I can run from it all, I can run til I'm gone.
I can run for the office & run for my cause.
I can run using every last ounce of energy.
I cannot, I cannot, I cannot run from my family.

They're hiding inside of me.
Don't change my life.
Help me if you might but don't tell my family.
They'd never forgive me.
They'd say that I'm crazy.
But they would say anything if it would shut me up

12. "Glory Box" by Portishead

I'm so tired, of playing
Playing with this bow and arrow
Gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I've been a temptress too long

Just. .

Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be ee, a woman
I just wanna be a woman

From this time, unchained
We're all looking at a different picture
Thru this new frame of mind
A thousand flowers could bloom
Move over, and give us some room

13. "Black" by Sarah McLachlan

'cause I can't see no reason
What is blind cannot see
'cause I want what is pleasin'
All I take should be free
What I rob from the innocent ones
What I'd steal from the womb

If I cried me a river of all my confessions
Would I drown in my shallow regret?
As the walls are closing in
And the colors fade to black
And the night is falling fast and deep into the sea
And in the darkness all that I can see
The frightened and the weak
Are forced to cling to mistakes they know nothing of
At mercy are the meek

14. "Walk Away" by Sarah Fimm
Goodbye Kureno. ;;

Make the change.
It's as though it's no one's fault at all
Put on your walking shoes
See you the next time you pass through the next time I will have to ask you to...
Walk away.
And I never said this would be easy
I can hardly stand.
We just keep
Spinning around
Spinning around it
I wish you well.
You can take your bow.
I'll take what's left of me now...
And walk away.

15. "Girl" by Tori Amos

from in the shadow she calls
and in the shadow she
finds a way finds a way
and in the shadow she CRAWLS
clutching her faded photograph
my IMAGE under her thumb
yes with a message for my heart
yes with a message for my heart

[...]

she's been everybody else's girl
maybe one day she'll be her own

and in the mist there she rides
and castles are burning in my heart
and as I twist I hold tight
and I ride to work
every morning wondering why
"sit in the chair and be good now"
and become all that they told you
the white coats enter her room
and I'm callin' my baby
callin' my baby callin' my baby callin'
everybody else's girl
maybe one day she'll be her own

I am moving on.

16. "Control" by Poe

Don't you mess
With a little girl's dream
'Cause she's liable to grow up
Mean

Surprise you to find that I'm laughing?
You thought that you'd find me in tears.
You thought I'd be crawling
The walls like a tiny mosquito
And trembling in fear.

Well, you may be king for the moment
But I am a queen understand
And I've got your pawns and your bishops and
castles
All inside the palm of my hand.

While you were looking the other way
While you had your eyes closed
While you were licking your lips
'Cause I was miserable
While you were selling your soul
While you were tearing a hole in me
I was taking control
Now I have taken control.

17. "Truth or a Lie to Believe" by Free Dominguez

A friend asked me how
I walk through fire, trial and strife,
And I said, "if you live long enough, you'll find, right here, right now, may be your best of times."
and we're searching for the same things
whether you're afraid or you're brave or both
looking for the truth or a lie to believe
we're searching
and if you're looking for a ray of hope, better yet -
a truth or a lie to believe
we're searching for love inside
somebody to love, a minute, a day or a life
(maybe just to sleep through the night)
I don't want to go out like someone who never tries.
