Slave to Love: A Misa Amane Fanmix
She's the hunter who became the prey. She's as strong as she is weak. She's the user and the used. She shook the world, killed, and brought down gods all with a smile on her face. Misa is a little girl lost and a woman who doesn't know how to live. She's a pawn, and she's happiest that way. She's reckless, devoted, submissive and aggressive, smart/stupid, jealous, cute, strong, and ultimately shattered. Most of all, Misa is a lover~
So, to show Misa Amane some love, I give you Slave to Love: A Misa Amane fanmix. For the girl who annoys us but still manages to leave the boys in the dust here and there.
Tracks by...
Emilie Autumn, Portishead, Massive Attack, Placebo, Garbage, Dresden Dolls, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, Lords of Acid, Bree Sharp, Jill Tracy, Eliza Carthy, Delerium, Kidneythieves, Goldfrapp, and Unto Ashes
Spoilers up to volume 10
This is my third fanmix and my first for the fandom. To be honest, I really didn't like Misa when I started reading Death Note. I thought she was treated like a joke, given the typical obsessive shounen girl role. She's a slave to her emotions, mysteriously devoted to the main character, not as smart as the men, and always a sex joke. But somehow, Misa Amane won me over. When I looked at her seriously, I found something very tragic and broken beneath the smiles and mini skirts. This is someone who doesn't want to live, but can't seem to die. When she found she could rebuild her shattered world around Light, she clung to it, because it's the only thing Misa found to live for after the murder of her parents.
XD Plus, Misa doesn't get enough love, so I wanted to give some to her. Comments are appreciated. Please let me know if the links aren't working.

"Unlaced" by Emilie AutumnInstrumental. Roar, no one can shred on an electric violin quite like Emilie Autumn, and man she plays the harpsichord fast. This chaotic, fast-paced, and dramatic piece makes me think of Misa's entrance. Pretending to be Kira. Live murders on TV. A bus crashing through the entrance of Sakura TV. And the reveal it was all carried out by a cute little 4'10" model. This song gives me chills. It seems very in line with Misa's personality, too, with the high ups and downs.

"Girl Anachronism" by The Dresden DollsThis song is Misa's reckless and extremist behavior to me. Little bits of the lyrics are so oddly appropriate. "The way the operation made me" - cutting her lifespan in half (twice) for the Shinigami eyes. "Pretending to be you" - imitating Kira. "The attention just encourages her" - the attention Light gives her drives Misa. Also, something broke in Misa, to turn an otherwise normal girl into a serial killer appealing to "higher" loyalties. She completely rationalizes away all of her guilt.
And you can tell
From the state of my room
That they let me out too soon
And the pills that I ate
Came a couple years too late
And I've got some issues to work through
There I go again, pretending to be you
Make-believing that I have a soul beneath the surface
Trying to convince you it was accidentally on purpose
I am not so serious
This passion is a plagiarism
I might join your century
But only on a rare occasion
I was taken out before the labor pains set in and now
Behold the world's worst accident
I am the girl anachronism

"I Want My Innocence Back" by Emilie AutumnThis song is angry and vicious and amazing. To me, Misa is on a search for something normal, a return to innocence. She watched her parents die in front of her, but somehow managed to escape. She hated her parent's murderer and wanted to kill him, but couldn't. Then Kira came and by coincidence, she gained the Death Note. It's interesting that Misa was so shocked to learn that Light was young. She had no intentions of falling in love with Kira; she wanted to thank and help him. It might be a stretch, but I feel like she was looking for a father figure, but found someone she could fall in love with instead. She saw an opportunity for someone to give her back her life and clung to it. We always see her in Lolita clothing, always trying to be cute like a little girl, calling herself a "good girl." And in vol 10, we see very clearly that Misa doesn't really want a life of killing. To her, every action is a means of getting her normal, happy ending.
I want my innocence back
And if you can't give it to me
I will cut you down
And I will run you through
With the dagger you sharpened
On my body and soul
Before you slit me in two
And then devoured me whole
I want my innocence back

"Evil Night Together" by Jill TracyThis song is dark, sexy, and piano driven. LOL Well, Misa wouldn't consider a night with Light killing people as evil, but I'm pretty sure most of us would. For our killing partners, Misa and Light.
It's a multiple down in solitary
And you'll uncover the evidence
You're shanghaied by a fishnet stocking
I'll hold you close while they dust for prints
Let's wile away the hours
Let's spend an evil night together
No need for cake or flowers
Let's spend an evil night together

"The Hunter Gets Captured by The Game" by Massive AttackMmm, this song is pretty and sexy trip hop. The lyrics so perfectly describe the way Misa tracked down Kira, revealed him as Light Yagami before all others, and then fell instantly into the role of his puppet. Her line, "I have the eyes, so I'm stronger." went out the window when she "fell in love at first sight."
Secretly I’ve been tailing you,
Like a fox that preys on a rabbit,
I had to get you, and so I knew,
I have to learn your ways and habits.
You were the catch that I was after,
But I looked up and I was in your arms,
And I knew I was captured.
I had laid such a tender trap,
Hoping you might fall into it,
But love hit me with a sudden slap,
One kiss and then I knew it.
My plans didn't work out like I thought,
'Cause I had laid my trap for you,
But it seems that I got caught.

"Train Song" by Eliza CarthyBeautiful and a bit voyeuristic. A song for Misa falling in love with Light, just by observing him, and the way she submits completely to him, losing herself.
When I saw my lover with a flush in his cheek
I went up to the window and I held out my hand
He's a demon lover and a spiritual man
But I think somebody will tell him
'Cos they think that he ought to know
I've been looking from my bedroom window and falling in love
Well I seek him in candlelight
Why do I seek?
I can love his body and I don't have to speak
Well I stood by his shoulder and I blew on his face
In his eyes were the pastures of a much greener place
I've been found out, what my mother's gonna say
But I was dragged down to a level of dismay

"To Bring You My Love" by PJ HarveyI love the feel of the organ in the background and the mentions of religious icons in this song. It's a bit dangerous. Misa goes through hell and high water for Light, all because of her love for him. She begged Rem to kill her before she gave up info on Light.
I was born in the desert, I been down for years
Jesus, come closer, I think my time is near
And I've traveled over dry earth and floods
Hell and high water, to bring you my love
Climbed over mountains, traveled the sea
Cast down off heaven, cast down on my knees
I've laid with the devil
Cursed God above
Forsaken heaven
To bring you my love

"Thank God I'm Pretty" by Emilie AutumnThis is the most sarcastic song and it's perfect. When all of the male characters run into Misa they usually notice that she's stupid, cute, annoying, and couldn't possibly be the second Kira. She's treated as a joke, usually a sex joke. I dedicate this song to Misa and all of the other pretty shounen girls. I'm poking fun at the DN writers. XD Though, I think Misa has internalized many of these things.
And when a gaggle of faces appears around me
It’s lucky I hate to be taken seriously
I think my ego would fall right through the cracks in the floor
If I couldn’t count on men to slap my ass anymore
I know my destiny’s such
That I must stocking and curl
So everybody thinks that I’m
A fucking Suicide Girl
Thank you God
For the occasional champagne I never asked for
The occasional admission to a seedy little bar
Invitation to a stranger’s car
I’m blessed
With the ability to render grown men tongue-tied
Which only means that when it’s dark outside
I have to run and hide
Can’t look behind me

"A Cheap and Evil Girl" by Bree SharpThis song is so quirky and fun. It makes me think of Misa's plot to discover the Corporate Kira, and also in some ways, her relationship with L. Though she was captured, she was released. For the second time, with Yotsuba, Misa discovered who Kira was before anyone else. I especially like the line "She can hypnotize with her evil eyes."
A cheap and evil girl sets out on the city
She's moistened every curl, she's poisonously pretty
And the unsuspecting fool falls prey
As the dim detective's led astray
And the genuflecting boys all say,
'The Cheap and Evil Girl will get her way'
The cheap and evil girl dances if you're worthy
She teases every twirl, she's deviously dirty
And you fantasize about the ample
Milky thighs you'd like to sample
Vocalize to her example
Deep, illegal sighs- Oh! It's a scandal!

"#1 Crush (Goth Mix)" by GarbageI'm bad, I used this song on my Shigure/Akito mix, but it's so perfect for Misa it would be wrong not to include it. SO I USED A GOTH REMIX INSTEAD. The lengths Misa has gone to for Light are pretty scary. The lyrics are self-explanatory.
I would die for you
I would kill for you
I will steal for you
I'd do time for you
I would wait for you
I'd make room for you
I'd sail ships for you
To be close to you
To be a part of you
'Cause I believe in you
I believe in you
I would die for you.

"Underwater" by Delerium feat. Rani KamalThis song is gorgeous electronica. What does Misa love about Light? Really. He relented to being her boyfriend, and in that promise Misa was linked to him throughout the series. As long as he continued to pretend, she would stay with him forever, but like she said, she doesn't care if he's using her. She's looking for a home.
Fingertips so gently on my skin
I'm underwater
I feel the flood begin
Fingertips so gently on my skin
You're taking over and over again
Shed your armor
Spin your web
Hypnotize me with the longest stare
Make your promise
Or maybe it's a threat
'Cos when you look
You look right through me
12.
"K" by KidneythievesThis song is fairly mellow industrial and there is this echoing chant that seems ...cultish. It's a pretty, sexy song. Misa reinvents her identity through her relationship with Light. No matter what happens to her, she is completely fine with it as long as in the end, she can be Light's "normal wife." Kill these people. Quit your job. Relinquish ownership of the Death Note. It doesn't matter.
I'm elevated / I've become a whore so I prepare to breathe
I'm stimulated / I'm becoming sworn to you for secrecy
I'm re-created / Anything you want I will forever be
I'm glad you made it
Spiritualize my sensuality
In your eyes, between you and me
Spiritualize my sensuality
In your eyes, between you and me
I can't evade it, yeah
You're all I've needed
I am created

"Slave to Love" by Lords of AcidKinky. This is the title of the fanmix, and while this song is clearly about, uh, BDSM, it's also fitting for Misa's submission to Light, especially the chorus "use me, abuse me." I don't recommend younger viewers d/l this song. XD
You made me your servant
Your submissive slave of love
All dressed up in leather
Anxiously waiting in cuffs
Come on break me
I must worship at your feet
I want you to take me
In our dungeon we will meet
Make me crawl on the floor - break me
Make me scream for more - take me
You rule. I adore - use me
Use me, abuse me
Make me sing with pain - break me
Make me go insane - take me
Make me shout your name - use me
Use me, abuse me
14.
"Taste in Men" by PlaceboI just realized Brian Molko is the only male vocalist on this mix, which is strange, but it's Placebo so it makes up for everything.
Dear Misa,
Change your taste in men.
Love,
Rem
Come back to me awhile
Change your style again
Come back to me awhile
Change your taste in men
It's been this way since Christmas Day
Dazzled, doused in gin
Change your taste in men
Come back to me awhile

"All Mine" by PortisheadPortishead wins at sexy trip hop always. While Misa definitely bends to Light's will, she's has an insane jealous streak and she can be incredibly stubborn. At the thought of Light seeing other girls, Misa said she would kill them. And you know she would've. She refuses to share "her" Light.
From that cloud, number nine
Danger starts the sharp incline
And such sad regrets
Oh as those starry skies
As they swiftly fall
Make no mistake
You shan't escape
Tethered and tied
Theres nowhere to hide from me
All mine....
You have to be
Don't resist
We shall exist
Until the day I die
Until the day I die
16.
"Utopia" by GoldfrappThis song is amazing, and I thank thank thank
seanachai for reccing it to me. &hearts I definitely think this is a Misa song, the way she uses her connections and modern technology to kill without being caught. Of course, this all goes back to Misa's loss of self in the creation of Light's Utopia.
I forget who I am
When I’m with you
There’s no reason, there’s no sense
I’m not supposed to feel
I forget who I am, I forget
Fascist baby
Utopia, utopia
My dog needs new ears
Make his eyes see forever
Make him live like me
Again and again
I’m wired to the world
That’s how I know everything
I’m super brain
That’s how they made me

"(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Unto AshesThis cover is beautiful. It's slower, mournful, and with female vocals. Oh, this song applies to Misa on so many levels. From her descent into murder, to accepting Kira as her savior, even to her inevitable early death.
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear that she couldn't go on
The door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared, saying don't be afraid
Come on maiden, and she had no fear
And she ran to him, then they started to fly
They looked backward and they said good bye, she had become like they are
She had taken his hand, she had become like they are
Come on maiden, don't fear the reaper
18.
"Joanni" by Kate BushNot to compare Misa to Joan of Arc, but in the end, Misa was a soldier of her chosen savior, Light. She was one of the few women in Death Note, especially one of the few who managed to live after facing Kira. I also thought it was appropriate to end with the song that whispers "au revoir." XDDD
All the banners stop waving
And the flags stop flying
And the silence comes over
Thousands of soldiers
Thousands of soldiers
Who is that girl? Do I know her face?
Who is that girl?
Joanni, Joanni wears a golden cross
And she looks so beautiful in her armor
Joanni, Joanni blows a kiss to God
And she never wears a ring on her finger
Please comment if you take, that'd be lovely. :)
