One fortunate (but currently unfortunate) outcome of my mother breaking her leg was that we had an extra ticket to Europe. It was to be a week in London and Paris, filled with luxury and lavish cultural experiences, not to mention really great wine. In a surprising chain of events, my father agrees to let me invite a friend to come along and fill the empty seat on the plane. So last night I gave a really good friend of mine who goes to Magnet (who shall for hereafter be referred to as Matt) a call, he and his parents are enthused and eager to make it work. The only hindrance: he doesn't have a passport. But as of last night, this was no problem. Matt's father has a really good friend who got his passport in 1 day from the center in Houston. So, all it was going to take is a drive down to Houston tomorrow, and everything would be set.
Tonight - Houston is out of the question. He must have a parent accompany him, and his mom cannot possibly make time to do it (the man he lives with and whom he calls "dad" is of no legal relationship to him). Also, he would have to have consent from his birth-father, which posed even more of a problem. The only other option would be getting the passports made here in Shreveport to be sent to New Orleans (at least I think the passport office is still there) and follow the standard two week waiting period. No good: we leave in 10 days. So, no passport = no travel.
This was to be the trip of a lifetime - a really good friend who also happens to get along well with my dad, a week in Europe, and general revelry. Not any more. It's the equivelant of telling a kid (s)he's going to Disney World, only to actually take him/her to the dentist's office to get a cavity filled.
Any of you have a passport and willing to spend a week in London/Paris?
