having one's fringe unfurled

so carter last night was a barrel of monkeys. the gig was great even though we had upstairs sitting-down tickets - we were right at the front so had a perfect view, without being crushed by shirtless sweating overweight middle-aged blokes. we turned up to the venue with our spare ticket, with memories of last year's sell-out experience making us think it'd be a breeze to get rid of it. but asking around, we soon discovered that every second person showing up seemed to have a spare to get rid of too! so after 10 mins standing in the cold we decided to choke on the £25 and just enjoy the show.
i vaguely remember s*m*a*s*h from a couple of tracks on a compilation tape someone did me in 1994 or thereabouts, but i had no idea how they sounded. as it turned out, they were average-to-shite indie. which is about what i was listening to in the mid 90s (along with everybody else). ah well.
anyway, to cheer us up, emf were next on and they pretty much did what they were supposed to. bouncy happy music. to be fair i only remember 3 of their songs, which they played along with a decent cover of "search and destroy".
carter themselves were great as ever. they even played "and god created brixton" off "a world without dave"; i was disappointed that they didn't do anything from "dave" last year. oh, and they did their cover of the smiths' "panic" (the b-side to "the only living boy in new cross") which is bloody great, including the sample from "the lost boys" - death by stereo! and jimbob's birthday cake was sweet.
now, if they do *another* "last ever" gig, i'll be a little annoyed.

carter, out, music, good
