[day 44 - Hoff] genetics lab, attn Perna [f]

Carson sat in the lab examining his findings again. Mouse trials might be in order, but he was having a hard time thinking. He'd dialed Atlantis again earlier in the day, but the nothingness was the same. It filled him with dread and he wasn't able to shake the feeling that something truly awful had happened. Jerry was getting more and more distant and depressed and Mike and Bethany were getting more grim by the day. Perna was one of the few bright spots in Carson's life at the moment and even that was negotiating a tangle of emotions and subtle attempts at seduction.

He hated being depressed. He hated being afraid. He hated the nightmares he'd been having of Rodney dying in a thousand terrible ways. He hated being stranded, not knowing.

More than all of it, he hated worrying that he'd say something wrong to Perna and offend her. He had no idea what the Hoffans thought of same-sex relationships, for one. She'd been making comments every so often about the horrors of cullings where no one survived, and how it was lucky he'd been on Hoff when Atlantis was attacked. At least, he assumed the city had been under attack, and the Wraith were the only ones who had the technology to do it. Carson didn't know now if there was a city to return to.

The research was only minimally distracting. He knew there was little going forward if it couldn't be tested, but the only way to viably test such a thing would be with a Wraith involved. The idea horrified him, but the longer he stayed on Hoff the more he knew that the Hoffans were obsessed with the project. They would have no qualms about human experimentation, about feeding someone to a Wraith -- if they could capture one -- to test the treatment. He shivered and tugged his labcoat closer about him.
