Day 52, morning; Athosian area, greenhouse, kitchens; Attn: Dixon, others [F]
Selen spent some time with his children and Tormin playing, but soon the children wanted to go to the place where Ridley and his people grew plants. Selen went along and arrived to find Gabriel and Katie there, harvesting. He went off to harvest what Gabriel called 'marrows' and Katie called 'summer squash' while Katie set the children to harvesting the pods of 'green beans' (some of which, confusingly, were purple or yellow or pink) and peas.
Selen remained mostly silent, trying to escape the sense of unease that had descended on him, the anger at Carson's beliefs. He immersed himself in the harvest, in the smell of fresh, growing things, the bright colours of life all around him. After he had gathered two baskets of the fruits, he moved to the tomatoes-- red and yellow and orange and pink and purple and green and even white and brown, a bounty of Earth varieties as he had rarely seen.
"All right, I'm supposed to be helping in the kitchens for lunch today," Gabriel announced. "Who wants to help me carry all these delicious treasures to Ian?"
The children all shouted in unison, causing Selen to smile despite his worry. They piled baskets in Gabriel's lap and loaded a small cart with them as well. Selen wheeled the cart out behind the laughing children who were pushing Gabriel's chair. Somehow, they managed to arrive safely outside the cafeteria and went in search of the cook.
