John had dozed fitfully, starting awake almost as soon as he began to dream, too conscious of the danger there even in sleep. Every noise wakened him, body already tensing in preparation for fight or flight. The nurse's arrival with lunch was the most recent interruption. He smiled charmingly at her as he took his tray and then studied the offerings before him, suddenly homesick for pizza or tacos or hamburgers.
