[f] [day 46] early evening, infirmary--attn biro, fields, kavanagh, mckay, others

Pat kept busy in the infirmary, humming tunelessly to herself. There was no lack of need, even with the help from the Hoffans. And what Carson doesn’t know about my working hours won’t hurt him, she thought.

Pat was especially impressed with the young Hoffan woman, Perna, though it nearly broke her heart to see the girl pining so clearly for Carson.

She shook her head to herself. Carson, you old dog. Gay and Pat never knew it. She shrugged inwardly and smiled. Whatever floats your boat. She was too old and too interested in other things to care for that sort of chase anymore. More power to Carson for seeing who he wanted and going for it.

Of course, it was possible that such a thing just wasn’t done on Perna’s homeworld. Carson’s choice of partner might have been more than a small shock for the young doctor.

Pat broke her humming to sigh for a moment, then tossed a wry smile at the patient she was checking. “Nothing to amputate yet, my dear,” she assured him, giving him an obvious wink. “Unfortunately, that means you’ll be back on duty in days instead of weeks, but if you’re nice to me I’ll see if I can get you some free physio no matter what your HMO says.”

That got a smile out of him.

She had just completed his chart update when three men stumbled into the infirmary.

“Correction!” she declared to herself. “Make that two.”

Two men walking, a third supported between them. She rushed forward just as the one called out “We need a doctor!”
