State of the Ficwriting, 2008

Jan 08, 2009 15:37

I keep meaning to do a 2008 fandom retrospective, but I just skimmed the stuff I wrote for mini-nano and realized that what I really want to do is talk about writing, both what I did last year and my plans for this year.

Last year I wrote 3 Porn Battle ficlets (2 MCR/Sandman, 1 MCR/FOB), one long DVD commentary (for idyll's Not a Pretty Girl, mostly MCR), one gen fic for the femgenficathon (Pamela Dean -- Tam Lin), and my yuletide fic (gen, Here is Greenwood). I also have 6000+ words of Brendon-goes-to-MIT AU (loosely based on Tam Lin) that's currently mostly Brendon and Patrick wandering around with brief cameos by Mikey and Mike Carden, but will eventually feature Ryan, Spencer, Jon, Frank, and Pete at the very least, but probably more than that depending on how the rest of casting goes. This is likely to be the longest single piece of writing I have ever written, and possibly ever will write, at least if I do it right. I also have ~1300 words of continuation of the Bob/Patrick Porn Battle ficlet that I believe is Part 2 of a short series, probably somewhere between 3 and 5 ficlets. Someday I may get it back from my beta... Unclear if it'll be before I get around to Part 3, though. Oh! And I have most of a Molly Walker application for the Tabula Rasa rp that I'll be finishing soon.

Besides a lot of crazy brainstorming, that's pretty much my fandom output for 2008.

Plans for 2009:

1. Revise the Molly Walker application and submit it. I have a lot of useful comments from technosage and ideas of how to improve it, and I think participating in Tabula Rasa will be both incredibly fun and good for my fiction writing skills.

2. Keep working on Brendon-goes-to-MIT Tam Lin AU. I might make a separate filter for this, or just keep using the mini-nano filter as a kind of generic wip filter. I'm not sure how well I'm going to be able to write something this long without some kind of feedback along the way.

3. Revise the Bob/Patrick Part 2, work on the next part. This series should be short enough that I ought be able to finish it in the next few months, even if I get a bit distracted by other things.

4. Finally finish the SPN/Heroes first kiss request ficlet that I've been stuck on for over a year -- I have ~1k of it, half of which I really really like, and some comments on how to fix the first bit, but I'm not totally sure how I want it to end. It was meant to just be a simple little way to get to the pairing requested (Sam/Isaac), but the implications of it are so interesting that it feels almost unfinished to leave it like that. On the other hand, it would be nice to just finish it up and get it off my hard drive.

5. Remus/Sirius for elsane -- the other first kiss request I haven't gotten to. Come to think of it, I should post the drabble I wrote on the first day of 2007 mini-nano that I had been vaguely thinking of as Remus/Sirius. But that was established relationship rather than first kiss, anyway.

6. Other stuff! But what?

Things that may or may not be in the cards for 2005:

1. My previous attempt at MIT fic: Five Times Dean Winchester Didn't go to MIT and One Time He Did. This might actually want to be 2 fics -- one for the 5 times, one for the going. It's possible that if I finish the Brendon-goes-to-MIT fic I'll be tired of writing about MIT, but I actually think that Dean (and Ash) would have a very different MIT experience than Brendon and co., so we'll see. More of a problem is my wariness about writing Dean. If I can finish #4 above, I might feel more optimistic about this.

2. Dean/Faith/Sam oral sex PWP. I have what I want from this completely sketched out, it just needs to be fleshed out fully into fic form. But I don't know if it'll ever happen.

3. The Diana Wynne Jones -- Deep Secret fic that I had originally hoped to write as a New Year's Resolution fic for Yuletide 2007. The plan would be alternating Maree/Rupert pov (like the book -- possibly journal/document fic like the book, also) during Maree's first year as Magid-in-training, culminating in a marriage proposal.

4. Chuck/Bryce at Stanford. The problem with this one is that I don't have a plot. [ETA: Oh! Serves me right for forgetting about picfor1000! The first thing that occurred to me when I saw my assignment is that Bryce should drag Chuck on a little road trip! Maybe I'll take them to the Monterey Bay Aquarium...]

5. Damien/Leito from Banlieue 13. This also has the lack of plot problem, but I really really really want to write them.

6. The Obnoxious Jerks -- either fic for it or an AU based on it. I need to re-read and see what I think.

7. Something Gosford Park-y.

8. Childhood favorites to re-read and consider writing or requesting for Yuletide next year: The Blue Castle, A Tangled Wed, and the Emily books by Diana Wynne Jones. The Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace, especially the high school books, and Emily of Deep Valley. Julian F. Thompson: The Grounding of Group Six, The Taking of Mariasburg, Band of Angels, Discontinued, Simon Pure.

9. AUs based on Nancy Drew mysteries!

10. The Breakfast Club -- again, either fic for it for an AU based on it. I did all that crazy casting speculation for a bandom version, but I never came up with a combination I was totally happy with.

11. Real Genius -- I don't think anyone else is ever going to write me the Chris/Jordan/Mitch of my heart, so I should probably consider doing it myself. A rather large % of the things on this list are school fics, though...

12. Further ficlets in the bandom/Sandman series. I've done Gerard/Death and Mikey/Delirium; I have 90 words of Desire+Despair/Pete that may someday continue, and I'm sure I could think of ideas for the rest of the Endless. Destruction/Frank? Destiny/Patrick? Dream/Gabe? Hmmmmmm.

13. So many other things! Especially Yuletide-y things -- Genji, Initial D (movie), Brisco County, A Tale of Time City, War for the Oaks, Cruel Intentions, and Closer all have some prayer of getting written, and I'm sure there's more as well. So many possibilities! And more time than usual. :D

Incidentally, I would love more first kiss prompts. Here's the original meme:

Comment with two characters I'm familiar with, and I'll tell you how they kissed (the first time).

Fandom list here; right after I post this I'll update it, though there will still probably be plenty of stuff not on the list -- feel free to ask for anything at all.
