Marlowe parked the Hornet on the street in front of the hotel. He didn't plan to stay long. He was almost to the elevator when he realized he didn't know where he was going. He turned and looked back, seeing a kid of about twenty manning the front desk. "Hey, Bucky," he called across the lobby, "I'm visiting a friend, Dick Foley, but forgot his room number." The boy told him, and Marlowe went upstairs. If there was a dead guy, the little detective would know about it, even if management didn't.

Marlowe stepped out of the lift and went to 312 and knocked. Foley answered. "Finally. Much longer, would've been two stiffs in tub." Marlowe met Psmith at the bathroom door, and the Englishman filled him in on what he'd been able to decode from Foley.

Marlowe took a look at the corpse in the tub. Italian guy, it looked like. At least he wasn't French.

Marlowe turned back to Foley, intending to ask a question, but was interrupted by Psmith's coat and revolver being shoved into his hand.

"Mustnn't get the coattails in the mess," Psmith explained, and leaned over the tub to stick his head out the window. "Can't quite see how our visitor came at it; bit of a climb for a corpse." He went on, but Marlowe ignored him.

"Was the door still locked when you came in?" Marlowe asked Dick.
