Marlowe parked the Hornet on the street in front of the hotel. He didn't plan to stay long. He was almost to the elevator when he realized he didn't know where he was going. He turned and looked back, seeing a kid of about twenty manning the front desk. "Hey, Bucky," he called across the lobby, "I'm visiting a friend, Dick Foley, but forgot his room number." The boy told him, and Marlowe went upstairs. If there was a dead guy, the little detective would know about it, even if management didn't ( ... )

Dick nodded. "Gone hour, two tops, still locked, nothing moved, window shut." He directed the last at Psmith's back.

"There's not so much as a drainpipe to kip up out here," said Psmith, drawing his head and shoulders back inside and collecting his things. "I suppose he may have abseiled from the roof, but then where's the rope?"

"Well, our late friend appears to have been put here by somebody who had access to a key. I'll interview the janitorial staff. Dick, you go ask the desk clerk if anybody's taken the spare key. Psmith, check the roof."

"Don't let's be hasty now," said Psmith. "We are overlooking methods of ingress right here before our eyes. Have we considered the possibility that he was extruded through the shower-head or climbed up from the drain?"
