The microwave beeped and the kettle whistled and something bubbled merrily and perilously close to overflowing on the stove, but Sherlock was too busy sifting through the tray of samples on the kitchen table to attend to any of them. His powers of concentration were consummate, and anyway he could monitor by smell that the experiment in the pot wasn't burning, so it was fine.

For the most part, the kitchen table and the counter-tops around the stove were covered with his work, but keeping in mind that his status in the flat was still provisional, Sherlock had very thoughtfully left precise little circles of clear space, both on the far corner of the table and next to the stove. He'd marked them off mentally with invisible barriers, and was doing very well at not encroaching on this demarcated space.

The refrigerator, too, had been subjected to the same mental treatment, although that had been almost trivial, as Sherlock had yet to acquire the sorts of samples that needed temperature control.

The sample he was currently working on, for instance, was mostly sand, sand and a bit of mud, with specimens mixed in. An empty bucket stood between the table and the stove. Several similar buckets awaited examination in the living room.

It was best not to clutter the kitchen.
