The worst part was leaving Gia and Vicky. Vicky was barely seven, and didn't really understand why the man that was the only true father figure she'd known was about to leave. Gia figured it out soon enough, after she read it in the papers. "Crazed gunman taken down by mysterious savior." She knew about Jack's line of work enough to know that if he was leaving town after something big like this, it was probably him.
It hurt him, seeing the look in her eyes when he told her he was leaving and he wasn't sure when he'd be back.
"Jack --!" She'd thrust the newspaper at him. "Look at that! You saved these people's lives! You're a hero! This could be the opportunity we've been waiting for...You could give all of that repairman stuff up. We could -- we could be a family. Do you know how much Vicky would love having a real father?"
But it wasn't as simple as that. He'd have his five minutes of fame, but once they found out who Jack was, they'd wonder why he owned an unregistered gun that he didn't have a license for. Then they'd find out he had no social security number. And soon after that, the IRS would be asking why he never filed his W-2s. And then it was off to be fingerprinted and cataloged into the system. It scared the piss out of him.
What frightened him even more was the strange postcard he found in the mail one day. Jack had several P.O. Boxes scattered around New York for purposes of anonymity -- but no one actually sent him mail. So what terrified him was when he found a postcard reading Aternaville, Canada. And across the scenic bird's-eye-view of the landscape was written in red magic marker, Just disappear. No name or return address -- just the name of a hotel where it had been bought.
Why had he followed it? Because people didn't just send him postcards from places he'd never heard of. Jack was curious -- beyond curious.
Before he even realized it, he was pulling into the little town on Gia's Buick. There was a large building prominently labeled "Five Seasons Hotel" so Jack parked his car across the street and took the steps two at a time to the entrance. He pulled his baseball cap low over his forehead as he approached the concierge desk. "Excuse me. Where do you guys sell your postcards?" The man directed him through the lobby, pointing at a small gift shop. Jack thanked him, politely (Canadians were known for being polite, weren't they?) and headed in that direction.
Just disappear...
What could that mean?
