If nothing else, Byron already liked the fact that Castiel was a rather efficient creature by nature. That, and it had been a long time since he'd had company for an entire night ( ... )

Castiel nodded and departed immediately to gather some kindling. He was used to following orders and he was pleased they were spending the night here. There was much beauty in the place and Castiel was still enjoying the feel of it. It had a profound peace about it.

Although he really didn't know what was required what he returned with was, by chance, of an effective size. He lay the sticks in the fire pit and turned his attention to the boxes. He read the labels but they told him nothing useful about their contents.

"I do not require sustenance," he said as he took a seat by the pit.
He eyed the confections with interest, however.

If this were any other time or place, Byron couldn't imagine himself doing something so...mundane...and perhaps childish, in it's way, as making sweet snacks around a campfire. He was beginning to accept, however, that in this town, there was no reason for him not to give in to these impulses. The fire was going steadily in a few moments and over it's warm, flickering shadows, Byron smiled ( ... )

Castiel watched what the Baron was doing. He appeared to be impaling a spongy substance in a stick.
It was a curious thing to do and the angel made no move to imitate. Instead he just stared at the result.

"I do not require food. It sounds an inconvenience to have to attend to it with such regularity. I do not wish to be bound to that. Do they not listen?" He stared at the puffball on a stick for a moment.
"Does that constitute a meal?" he gestured to the marshmallow.

Byron sighed. So this was going to be harder than he first thought. But how to convince him? For him, learning to eat had made it that much easier to travel in the evenings-- although everything else about him screamed 'Nobility' he could still walk into a tavern and eat ( ... )

Castiel took in the Barons words. If what he said was true, about bonding, about ease of communication, then eating could be a useful skill.
He remember the drink he had had with Felix and released the truth in Bryon's words.

He stared at the marshmallow for a moment before picking up a stick. "I wish to learn this skill," he said and he reached out for a marshmallow.
He impaled it on the stick and held it over the flames. When it was caramelised on the outside he pulled it out of the flame as he had noted Byron do. He held it out in front of him.

Snack
He repeated the unfamiliar word to himself.
"What is the next step?" he asked intently.

'Thank the Ancestor...'

"Wonderful!" Byron exclaimed, taking out two pieces of graham cracker and breaking off a squarish bit of chocolate. "Next, place the chocolate on the cracker; then the marshmallow on top of that..." That bit took a little manevuring where The Baron went silent for a moment.

"Last, put the other cracker on top of the marshmallow and pull...this stick out...there." After a moment of concentration Byron showed Castiel the finished product. The white gooey stuff oozed enthusiastically out from all sides but never quite fell to the ground.

Castiel studied the finished confection. It held no inherent appeal but it did provide a challenge and Castiel was not adverse to that.

He took the crackers, placed the chocolate on top and placed the result on the bench he had been sitting on. Then he pulled the hot marshmallow off the stick and placed it on the chocolate. He placed the second cracker on top and placed the result in his mouth. It just sat there for a moment. Then he began to chew, slowly. He chewed for sometime, his face went from blank to surprised. When he finally swallowed he had control of his expression again but he gave it all away when he asked. "May I have another?"

"As many as you like, although I wouldn't recommend over-indulging." Byron didn't know how angels worked but his vampire body certainly had to experience a period of adjustment to eating regularly. "I'm glad you find it to your liking."

The Baron looked up and regarded the house before them. Prrhaps it would be a good idea to see the inside, whether that adhered to the laws of this place or not. But first, another s'more.

Castiel carefully nibbled on the corner of a second one but after he finished he lowered the stick. Jimmy's stomach was beginning to feel strange.

Castiel watched his companion look at the house. "You wish to go inside," he said softy. After a long pause he said, "If we touch nothing I do not believe it would hurt to view it."

"I do believe that is a reasonable line of thought." A string of marshmallow caught on a pointed tooth and Byron licked it off--the one disadvantage to this particular snack. For a moment he rumaged under his cloak and produced a small silver cylinder. He buried it near the fire and a shimmering bubble encased the flames. "We don't have to worry about leaving it now." Part of what he enjoyed about having arrived in his carriage was that he was still prepared to traverse The Frontier, and the tools he's taken with him were all terribly convenient ( ... )

Castiel stared at the decide for a moment but he thought little of it. Although he had never seen Dean with one as far as he was aware this was a typical possession for a human or those who live a humanesque life. He turned from it to follow the Baron. He watched him place his hand on the door with great interest. Of course, Castiel had so need of lock-breakers, but he was curious at how the Baron was going to win them entry ( ... )

Recovering, Byron steadied his feet underneath him, his eyes following the little light that Castiel summoned. Byron could see perfectly in the dark, and what he saw was rather remarkable. There was a grandeur to the place that more than matched the outside--the two huge spiral staircases stood out in their paleness. Dusty carpet covered hard wood floor that was once so highly polished it still had some of his gleam.

It was, in a word, perfect.

"As an angel and a vampire, yes, it is rather large for the two of us." Byron admitted, stepping in and investigating the vaulted ante chamber they'd stepped into closer. It didn't seem as if the previous owners had taken anything with them--there were even vases of dried flowers set on high decorative end tables. "But as humans, it is more than satisfactory." Byron peeked into an adjoining room, which proved to be a large parlor with two mirrored walls. It would double as a wonderful dance studio if there was somewhere else to put the furniture. "The bedrooms must be up stairs."

"We are not humans," Castiel said pragmatically. Castiel was not interested in the bedrooms, he had no use of one. He had little intention of sleeping, he didn't even know how to. He stood in the middle foyer and watched the Baron leave to investigate his new home.

"I will wait here," he said, moving to study a particularity violent painting depicting a nineteenth century battlefield.
