It was sort of remarkable how things that Billy would never, ever have seriously considered doing started to sound totally reasonable - even appealing - when the suggestion came from Kaylee. Take ice skating. He had probably been about six the last time he'd gone, and he really hadn't missed it. Sports and cold were two things he generally tried to avoid. But ice skating with Kaylee...

Well, here he was, bundled in a winter coat and scarf and heading down to the pond. That said it all, really. He was relieved to see so many other people skating, not because he liked to be in a crowd much, but at least he could be confident that the pond hadn't thawed out too much yet.

He stopped beside Kaylee, hesitating only an instant before putting an arm around her shoulders. "Hello. Are we ready to try this?"

Kaylee grinned as Billy approached, leaning over to give him a quick kiss on the cheek as he put his arm around her shoulders.

"I think so!" She replied brightly. "We can rent skates over there-" there was a stand set up a little ways from where they were standing where they were, indeed, renting skates. "I been watching everybody for a while now. Don't look too hard-" but then again, Kaylee had never done anything like this before. Of course it looked easy!!

"Oh?" Billy was doubtful about that. But they'd agreed to give it a shot. Little kids were doing it, it couldn't be totally impossible to learn. "I guess we'd better get some skates, then."

They headed over to the rental area. He would, of course, pay for hers. Soon enough they were seated on a bench beside the pond, struggling with the laces. "They're heavy," he remarked sheepishly, after the third time he lost his grip on the laces.

"They are!" Kaylee agreed, nodding in surprise. She hadn't expected the skates to be near this heavy, though Billy's were even larger than hers.

Eventually, though, they both managed to get the skates securely on their feet, and Kaylee held out her hand to Billy.

"Gonna need some help, I think," she laughed. "At least getting standin' right off!"
