Knocking would have been polite and thoughtful. Harry held his wand loosely by his side, casting a spell over the door to silence its hinges. Remus knew he was coming. There was no need to alert anyone else.

He'd never felt so miserably angry at Remus before. Frustrated, upset by, certainly, but never angry. Remus was Remus. Quiet, calm, introverted, but Harry'd never thought to add self-deluded to the list before. If Remus thought Harry would let him get away with that, he didn't know him very well at all ( ... )

Remus glanced up from his book, slowly closing it and setting it aside, as if he hadn't known Harry had come into his house. Of course he'd known.

"Good morning, Harry.." He looked like his eyes had been wet, but there was no sign that he'd been crying. Remus Lupin didn't cry. "Please sit." He slid the book onto the table next to him and smoothed his other hand over the couch, to invite the older (younger) man to sit with him.

"I am sorry for what I said, if it upset you. I don't really like to talk about myself and remembering some things upsets me." Surely Harry understood that.

Remus Lupin didn't do a lot of things, Harry was noticing as he stood before him. Like feel anything normally. He twisted his wand between his fingers.

"Upsets you?" Harry could not have sounded more mocking even if he tried.

That made Remus give him a flat look. "You don't have to make fun of me, Harry. Yes, it upsets me. What else am I supposed to say? I feel upset." Because that was the word he used for anger, frustration, sadness, confusion, and a multitude of other things. Upset and happy, for the most part.

"That was because of me." He turned sharper blue eyes onto Harry, then. "That had nothing to do with her. She hugged me. But I put a stop to it." Because she cried when she did it. Because she was so distraught about what her little boy, her angel, had turned into. She was sad for him. Worried. Scared. Everything mothers felt, all rolled up.

"She was your mother." Harry'd only had his for under a year, and he already knew if she really wanted to, she could hug him all she wanted and he wouldn't be able to do a thing about it.

"That shouldn't have stopped her. Especially since you were so young."

"I didn't want her to. She respected that." Or she'd been grateful.. he wasn't sure which, honestly. But he liked to think that she stopped out of respect for his wishes. "You're trying to make her out to be a bad person, and she wasn't. She and my father were good parents. And they loved me. They just got dealt a bad hand in life."

"I never said she was bad." He hadn't. He hadn't even heavily implied it. "She was a bad mother though. She didn't deserve you."

Harry's fingers tightened around Remus' arm as he struggled with himself to think of what to say.

Unfortunately, what came out was a quietly mumbled, "All right."

He let go, stepped back, and took a sharp pull from his tea cup. He wondered if it'd be improper to wake up his mother and start babbling out what he'd just done. Probably would be. She'd wake up too worried something was horribly wrong.

Remus smeared a hand over his face and nodded, then moved out of the kitchen and up the stairs, across the livingroom. He was as quiet as possible when he moved into his and Sirius' shared bedroom, and cast a silencing charm around the bathroom, before climbing into the shower ( ... )

Harry jumped from the chair he'd fallen into around minute five when he heard footsteps on the stairs. He paused, straining to decipher who it was. There was only three options after all. Tension coiled in his muscles and he prepared to run. The only person he'd come here to see he'd already chased off. He couldn't deal with explaining to his mum or Sirius why he was there so late at night.

And any excuse he could possibly have would sound lame.

When Remus rounded the corner, Harry's shoulders slumped. He cast an embarrassed look around the kitchen as he searched for something to say.

It was with a startled gasp that he leaned into the touch, wondering both what it meant and if he should take a single drop of hope from it.

"I'm sorry," he said in a breathless rush.

"So am I." The werewolf quietly assured, and stepped in closer to Harry, then leaned his head forward so that their foreheads were touching, damp as the younger (older) man was. But he didn't wrap his arms around the green-eyed boy, only stood quite close.

"I understand what you were trying to do.. what you did do.. and I appreciate it. You're good for me, Harry Potter." A whispered admission. "I wish I'd always had you."
