Since I will be away this weekend to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr at my grandmother's house with family and relatives, I want to wish Happy Eid ul-Fitr in advance! This year will be a little bit special because my niece is celebrating her first Eid ul-Fitr since she's born in 2012.
I went to KLCC with my sisters for book shopping. I managed to grab the latest volume of Victorian Rose Tailor. I also bought the two volumes of Aki's Aruosumente and the second volume of Bride of the Water God. I wanted to get the second volume of Mori Kaoru's A Bride's Story (Otoyomegatari) but due to budget constraint, no.
BUT BEING ABLE TO TOUCH FLAWLESS AKI'S ARTWORKS. MY GOSH!!! IT'S LIKE I FOUND TREASURE!
I started scanning the novel illustrations last night but the scanner was being a tsundere although it does make the sound of someone's stomach growling. It refused to scan at 600 ppi, but it worked flawlessly fine at 1200 ppi! I am fine with large resolution (since 300 ppi is still considered small) but pressing the book manually was painful to my hands. I kept pressing, it started feeling numb. Where's the heavy book when you need one?
I plan to watch War Horse tonight. Not because there's Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston although seeing men in military uniform is interesting. When I read the synopsis, it's not even about those two because the main character is Jeremy Irvine and the horse! The film receives positive reviews so hopefully I will enjoy watching it.
Also, since it's still about military...
TZA releases double chapters of TOXIC with four chapters left to conclude the series. I hope things end well although it's unlikely but it's not wrong to have a small ray of hope, right?
Next entry will be a review of Emura's W Juliet and Grand Sun. And, since I don't consider Mairunovich as worthy enough to have its own review entry, I will review it in this post. I like the art but the plot is the classic case of an ugly girl who transforms into a beautiful girl after a life shattering moment. Honestly, what is definition of ugly in shoujo manga?
Kinoshita Mairu is not ugly but someone with a low self esteem.
She considers herself ugly as she wears glasses and her hair covers her face. Her peers call her the Poison Mushroom. Her brother treats her as a useless person. She doesn't have friends except for her neighbour, Fuwari-chan (who is a transverstite) and after a strange turn of events, Kumada Tenyuu. After a life shattering moment where Mairu is pushed into a deep hole, she transforms from an ugly person into a beautiful person with the help of make up. While her transformation surprises everyone, including her brother, her attitude is still the same. When things don't go well, she returns into becoming the ugly her. However, with Fuwari and Tenyuu's encouragement, things are starting to change a little bit. She is learning to discover love.
I have read until chapter 9 but according to MU, it's an ongoing series with 5 volumes already published. I read the author's note and her relationship with the guy in volume 2 starts and ends in the same volume. I'm sure she'll meet other guys to extend the story but if this is a typical shoujo, the guy who has always been supporting her will be the end pairing. However, it doesn't seem like Tenyuu is interested in having a relationship with Mairu. He doesn't even remember her name -- something along the lines of 'bento girl' because she makes him lunch box.
I will give a point for the artstyle and the humor but the plot? I have to read more to figure out my thoughts. I'm not convinced that make up alone is enough to transform one's unsignificant life significance. I will only be convinced when Mairu learns to accept herself.
Until next time!
